We are so honored to be involved with this beautiful, and now award-winning project by Boyer Architecture. The house is a striking example of modern architecture, with bold, clean lines and an open, airy feel that creates a seamless flow between indoor and outdoor spaces. Every detail was crafted to maximize light, space, and a connection to the environment.

Completed in 2024, we had the pleasure of designing the surrounding landscape, carefully considering the views we wanted to highlight and those we wanted to soften. Hardy evergreens, drought-tolerant grasses, and perennials were star players in this garden, creating a resilient yet tranquil outdoor space that complements the architectural vision perfectly.

Congratulations to the entire RBA team on this well-deserved recognition!

REST

In the garden rest is a welcome experience in its many forms…from the very literal resting on a hammock under a tree, or on a bench by a water feature - to creating a calming field of vision to to rest our eyes upon. In the design process we are always looking to create these spots of respite. Renderings: Suzy Knutson

Currently under construction, the newly remodeled home, designed by Risa Boyer Architecture and built by Don Tankersley Construction sits upon a hillside in Council Crest. Our design includes 3 large sweeps of steel and stone which act to ‘hug’ the geometry of the home and guide the view from the inside.

During our first site visit, we identified the sightlines we wished to preserve and the sightlines we wished to interrupt. When inside the home, we guide and obscure the view with layered plantings which include climate adapted grasses, perennials, shrubs, and trees.

The first and second images are renderings, by Suzy Knutson, of our design. While our plans include more variety in the plant palette than is seen in the renderings, they provide the client a strong sense of what the end result will feel like.

The red arrows illustrate the views from the home. We will install plants of varying heights, both deciduous and evergreen, on varying elevations of the slope to emphasize/de-emphasize our chosen sightlines.

We love ornamental grasses for their versatility and wide range of uses. They provide gentle flowing movement in the garden. They can be the hardworking, tough-as-nails evergreen backbone to a garden or a dramatic seasonal star. In combination they add softness and structure. Here are some of our favorites from past projects.

Hakonechloa macra, Ophiopogon umbraticola, Eco Lawns, Pennisetum spathiolatum, Sesleria autumnalis, Sesleria autumnalis ‘Campo Verde’, Calamagrostis x acutiflora ‘Karl Foerster’

As we transition to fall here in the PNW it's a great time to reflect on the plants and plant palettes that accentuate the season. Warmer colors make things feel cozy, while bright foliage stands out on gloomier days -- and they're equally at home in the rain as they are against a blue sky.

This back garden was completely transformed from an overgrown and unusable space to one that is an entertainer’s dream. Where there was once only a 3’ path around the foundation of the house and a 5’ tall slope of soil up to a fence, now there are dining and lounge areas for guests and a semi-private seating outside of the primary suite. This garden is more about place, connection to the interior of the home and living than it is about plantings. However, the hardscape is nicely balanced with broad-leaved evergreen hedging, jasmine, softening grasses and spring blooming perennials.
