Backyard Blueprint - ADU

08/24/2026

We had a terrific time last week sharing coffee and discussion with the Just Create Community group at Copperhead Coffee in Hillsboro! Lots of great questions about the evolving legal landscape for ADUs, especially in rural zones.

We also discussed the many uses of an ADU - everything from an independent home for a young adult in the family to a downsized post-retirement getaway on one's own property. The main house can be rented or kids and grandkids might move in. So many options, with even more coming along as Oregon laws continue to provide more options for infill housing and multigenerational living.

We're lining up more events for the fall and early 2027 - watch this space to learn more, or drop us a message to get an email or text when we'll be sharing coffee and discussion near you! And thanks to the JCC for a wonderful morning!

More ADUs in the news!

This Business Insider article offers a great overview of how ADUs support families' Aging in Place strategies. At Backyard Blueprint, Aging in Place is a key focus of our business. Drop us a DM to explore how an ADU might be right for your family!

Four homeowners said that building an accessory dwelling unit (ADU) on their properties has allowed them to be better caregivers to their loved ones.

Everyone we talk with about building an ADU has their own initial idea of what problem they hope it'll solve, or what benefit they might gain from it. House Beautiful has a great article this week about the author's experience purchasing a home with an ADU and discovering uses and its value she'd not even considered before.

A nice article to close out the week. Have a great weekend!

The real value of an ADU isn’t what you may think.

A Walkthrough with Allahna: Building an ADU for Family 💙🏡

Join us as Allahna takes us on a walkthrough of her completed 565 SQFT ADU, built in her backyard to give her aging father a safe, comfortable place to call home.

Designed with aging-in-place in mind, this home features a no-threshold entry, a walk-in shower, and pocket doors to make everyday living easier as mobility needs change.

During our conversation, Allahna shares what it was like navigating the ADU process for the first time. Like many homeowners, she started with a lot of uncertainty, but she talks about how important the human side of the experience was and how our team helped guide her through each step with confidence.

We’re incredibly grateful that Allahna trusted us with such an important project, and we’re excited to share her story.
