Project architect, Mary Seed! She is beloved around the EA office for her strong design eye, technical savviness, prevalent Gif sending, and hilarious banter that keeps us all going. When she’s not answering the latest Revit question, she’s playing with her two-year-old daughter, or seeking out delectable vegan treats. To learn more about Mary and her love for design, follow the link in our bio to read her Architect Spotlight Interview.

Did you know that May is Mental Health Awareness Month? The isolation, turmoil and heartache of the last year has taken a toll on all of us, and the effects have been harder on some more than others. As the vaccines roll out and we begin to re-enter society, that brings a new layer of stress to many of those around us. With all of that in mind, we are focusing this month on the well-being of our entire team, helping us all find ways to feel joy and be well.

Beyond our team, there are many people in our communities who can use support. One group lending a helping hand is the Asian Mental Health Collective, who “aspires to make mental health easily available, approachable and accessible to Asian communities worldwide.” With a mission that values connecting, collaborating and celebrating, AMHC strives to balance culture and tradition with mental health in the Asian community. They provide many valuable resources to the community and we proudly support their cause.

Happy Earth Day! This year we are celebrating our wonderful bee friends, who do so much good for our environment. Fun fact, did you know that Mason Bees outwork Honey and Bumble Bees 120 to 1, and even go through cool temps and rain? And better yet, they don't sting! These non-destructive bees find shelter in nature's little crevices, but they also appreciate a good human made flat like this one, which allows us enjoy their company in perfect harmony!

It's Friday! And since we are nearing the end of Black History Month, we wanted to take a moment to highlight and donate to an organization that is planting new history seeds in our Portland community. is a charter school determined to elevate the voices of underserved children of today to be creative, kind, leaders so that we may continue to write the history of the future with powerful new voices.

We had the honor and privilege to work with this team on some design concepts for a future new school a couple years ago. We were energized by their commitment to building a school environment that will directly nurture and elevate their young students.

Tomorrow evening they are holding their annual fundraiser called Spread the Love. Please consider checking out this AMAZING team of educators, hearing what they're all about, and learning the many ways they are advancing equity in education. Link in bio 🥳

This group is the heartbeat of all we do. 2020 was unprecedented. Without these amazing human beings weathering personal and professional challenges with grit and gratitude we could not have come through whole. In 20 years of running a business there have been ups and there have been downs. There have been times of celebrations and times of reflection. We believe in this city, in this community, in this team. We are proud that our legacy of work stretches to every neighborhood. Thank you to this team and thank you to our clients who have trusted us every day with their dreams and places of meaning. We look forward to seeing you in 2021. Happy New Year ❤

In celebration of our 20th year in business, we're taking a look back at some of the projects that have shaped our work and inspired our journey. Follow along with . We hope our trip down memory lane is pleasant distraction from the current challenges in the world.
Back in 2006, we worked on the Ford Building (originally a Ford Model T Factory!) before Division Street was packed with apartment buildings, hip restaurants, and unique boutiques--before it was a destination in Portland. Revitalizing this building was one of the biggest catalysts to jump start development in the neighborhood. The interior was renovated with upper level creative offices and street level shops, adding large storefront windows where there had previously been none.
Fun fact: The building was at one time the main Ford factory for the Northwest. The elevator inside was big enough for a Model T to be brought to the roof and then craned to a train directly to the south of the building. Freight trains still rattle the building when they pass by today!

Our Story

Emerick Architects was founded in Portland, Oregon in 2000 by principals Melody and Brian Emerick. Our goal is to create great work in the communities where we live, work, and grow.

At Emerick, we see things through an Oregon lens. Brian Emerick is a 7th generation Oregonian, so local is part of our DNA. He is Emerick’s leader on commercial work, with extensive experience in adaptive reuse and historic buildings. As former chair of the Historic Landmarks Commission and a member of Portland’s Unreinforced Masonry Seismic Retrofit Project, Brian brings an unparalleled understanding of the challenges facing our existing urban structures.

Melody Emerick is the creative heart of Emerick Architects. Intuitive, talented, and a great communicator, her role is to lead client discussions and build collaborative relationships. Trained and licensed as an architect, but with additional interior design training, Melody leads the residential design team at Emerick Architects.

Our group of talented architects and designers bring a wealth of knowledge to the studio with design experience from all around the world. As true Portlanders, they all enjoy walking, biking and running by projects where they have made a proud contribution to the city they call home. From designing and building Portland's first LEED Gold home, to being entrusted to restore Portland's oldest commercial building, we take community and environmental stewardship to heart.
