Nothing moderate about our love for this project!

Over the summer, the Acorn team had the pleasure of attending the ribbon cutting for 21 Town Hall Place, which includes the new home for Moderation Brewing as part of the historic redevelopment of Brunswick’s Central Fire Station. This project included the reuse of the old firehouse building into a bigger and better Moderation Brewing facility but also 5 of affordable housing units located in heart of downtown Brunswick. Cheers to all of the project partners and new residents!

"Wave" as we fly by - Acorn is on the road!

Last week, Acorn conducted the first in a series of education and technical assistance workshops throughout Hancock County's coastal communities, in partnership with Hancock County Planning Commission. The three-part workshop series, made possible by the Maine Department of Environmental Protection, is focused on understanding how Maine's coastlines - namely dune and bluff systems - change over time, and will discuss how communities and landowners can respond to storm damage and increased climate hazards through assessing sites for vulnerability, identifying project goals, and by incorporating nature-based strategies into final designs. We are grateful to work with municipal staff, conservation agencies, and landowners in their efforts to plan effectively for coastal change. Look for us in the dunes, and bluffs, and community centers of Hancock County as we conduct Workshops 2 and 3 in October!

Bridging the Gap

Acorn was pleased to attend the ribbon cutting for the new Stroudwater Pedestrian Bridge earlier this month. Ten years ago, this project started as a map amendment to develop a subdivision in the upland area while preserving 23-acres adjacent to the Stroudwater River for open space and public access.

Fast forward to today: this project for Portland Maine Parks, Recreation & Facilities Department, in collaboration with Portland Trails, provides a pedestrian crossing that completes the missing link between the Stroudwater and Fore River Trails. With the Portland Technology Park to the north and Unum to the south, the trails and open space allow residents to live, work, and play in their community.

Acorn provided civil engineering, floodplain management, and permitting services for the project.

Earlier this summer the Acorn team was proud to attend the “topping off” ceremony for Bellwether in Bayside. In addition to setting the final beam, the broom represents a clean sweep with no major incidents and a point of pride for all those involved in the construction process. When completed, this Avesta Housing and Reveler Development project will transform a parking lot into 201 affordable housing units with two ground level commercial spaces.

We look forward to seeing the building and site advancing to completion in 2027!

This summer the Acorn Landscape Design Team had the pleasure of working with Coffee and Bakery, one of our favorite coffee shops and bakeries in Portland, to revamp their planting and outdoor space. Updated planters to fit over recently placed barriers and native plantings helped to make the space more inviting...so much so that we couldn’t help ourselves from stopping by for a quick break with a very willing model!

Last month, Acorn Engineering, on behalf of High Peaks Alliance, received final Planning Board approval for the Sandy River Bridge in Farmington, Maine.

This new 340-foot multi-use bridge will reconnect the Whistle Stop Trail to downtown Farmington, creating a safe and accessible crossing for pedestrians and snowmobilers while strengthening connections between western Maine's outdoor recreation network and the local business community. The bridge will ultimately be owned and managed by the Maine Bureau of Parks and Lands as part of the Whistle Stop Trail system.

Led by High Peaks Alliance in partnership with the Maine Bureau of Parks and Lands and numerous community stakeholders, the project represents nearly two decades of planning, collaboration, and advocacy. Beyond improving recreation and trail access, the bridge is expected to support economic activity by attracting additional trail users and visitors to downtown Farmington.

Acorn is providing site/civil engineering design and permitting services in collaboration with Flycatcher LLC, while Thornton Tomasetti is providing structural engineering services in support of the local approval process. GEI Consultants, Inc. provided the preliminary H&H and geotechnical analysis. Credit to Richardson & Associates for the provided renderings of the bridge.

We're proud to be part of a project that will enhance outdoor access, community connectivity, and economic vitality in the region. Congratulations to High Peaks Alliance, the Bureau of Parks and Lands, the Town of Farmington, and the many partners who have helped move this project forward.
