Hardypond Construction

Hardypond Construction Hardypond Construction is a female-owned general contractor and family-owned business servicing South

On December 23, 1989, two days before Christmas, Bob Gaudreau was laid off from his construction job. In order to make ends meet, he and his wife had to return their daughter’s gifts from underneath their Christmas tree. It was an experience he wanted to make sure was never repeated: not for himself and not for anyone else if he could help it. Though common practice, after experiencing seasonal la

y-off Bob realized it was no way to run a successful construction company. Rather than let his situation get the best of him, Bob turned this experience into an opportunity. He decided he would start his own construction company, one where employees would be valued and appreciated and whose foundation would be honesty and transparency. Nine days later, on January 1, 1990, Bob founded Hardypond Construction. True to his word, Bob built a company that has endured by sticking to these principles. Through profit sharing, empowering female employees, and utilizing the skills of a diverse workforce, Hardypond has built a committed team of project managers, site supervisors, and subcontractors that are as strong as steel. Their clients appreciate the honesty Hardypond brings to every project and the open communication style they utilize in order to get the job done right.

Photos of a recent expansion we completed for Coastal Women’s Healthcare show part of phase two of a larger project at their Scarborough clinic. This was our fourth project with the client, and we worked closely with their team to update spaces while the clinic remained fully operational.

The expansion included more exam rooms, two surgery rooms with adjoining prep room, a large nurses station, and many other work areas for providers. Phase two began once these new areas were ready for use and focused on renovating the breakroom and kitchen. We also made cosmetic updates to lighting, doors, flooring, and paint in other areas, and adjustments to a wing of exam rooms.

Projects like this reflect the collaboration, planning, and care we bring to each phase, creating spaces that support both staff and patients every day.

Office fit-ups are about more than finishes. They are about creating spaces that reflect the company inside them.

For iBec Creative, Hardypond transformed a dark medical office into a bright, modern workspace designed for collaboration, flexibility, and growth. Working within a tight budget and timeline, our team delivered open work areas, custom design details, and a signature office bar that brings personality into the space.

Sustainability is a core priority for Hardypond on every project. We work intentionally to reduce jobsite waste and build as efficiently as possible. That approach aligned naturally with iBec’s B Corp commitment and broader focus on responsible business practices.

We recently completed a project for our clients, Chestnut Partners LLC, relocating their Auburn salon to 730 Center Street. While this was a smaller project compared with some of our ground-up multifamily or municipal renovations, it still required the same level of attention and effort we bring to every project. One of the main challenges was moving equipment and furniture from the old space while keeping the salon closed for just three days. Projects like this show how our team applies Sisu, which means perseverance, integrity, and attention to detail, on every project. We enjoy working with business owners and specialize in tenant fit-ups, bringing thoughtful ex*****on and care to each project we take on.

As the year comes to a close, we’re reflecting on the causes and organizations our team cares about most. For Giving Tuesday earlier this month, every Hardypond employee shared a local nonprofit they support, and we were proud to make a donation to each one. We are especially proud that some of these organizations are also our clients. Working with mission-driven partners is one of the things that makes our work meaningful.

This year we were proud to support organizations our employees care about, including Hope Acts, YMCA Camp Huckins, LearningWorks, Greater Portland Family Promise, Friends of Feral Felines, Preble Street, Maine Needs, the Jim Foye Memorial Foundation, and Girl Scouts of Maine. Seeing what matters to our team and being able to extend that impact as a company is one of our favorite traditions.

Cities, schools, nonprofits, business owners, and developers come to us for disciplined ex*****on, craftsmanship, and predictable project outcomes. Owners and developers need a partner who can deliver well and stay focused on schedule and budget. That is the foundation of our work.

Sustainability is part of that foundation. It does not replace the fundamentals, and it is not a separate initiative. It is part of who we are as an organization and part of how we build long-lasting, high-performing spaces.

On our jobsites, we track construction waste and measure our diversion goals. Our team continues to exceed the benchmarks we set for ourselves. To us, this reflects thoughtful planning, long-term thinking, and respect for the places where our projects take shape.

For owners and developers, it means working with a builder who is serious about ex*****on and equally committed to responsible, forward-looking practices.

At our recent team meeting, we recognized APM/Estimator Michael Squires for demonstrating the spirit of Sisu. Michael joined us in August and has stepped up whenever the team needed support, even when the tasks had nothing to do with his official role. His attitude and attention to detail have impressed everyone.

This is not something we hand out often, which made it all the more deserved. The trophy is small, but the impact of his work is not. Thank you, Michael.
