Project partnering with The Ground to clean and restore the historic building in downtown Carlton that houses their offices and tenant retail spaces. Originally the Brooks Hotel built in 1914, it was converted to apartments in the late 1920’s. In 1942 a fire gutted the interior, by 1945 a remodel added a movie theater, coffee shop and offices. After the theater closed in the 1960s, many businesses have been housed in the Brooks Building up to the present.

The recent work completed in July 2026 consisted of an exterior restoration of the brick to clean, tuckpoint and seal the masonry, repaint windows, doors, trim, and reclad the sheet metal of the original marquee. We are glad to be part of small but impactful projects like this preserving rural Oregon history.

Breaking ground on more than a project.
Today marks the start of another exciting project with Jesuit High School Portland, a partner we’ve had the privilege of working alongside for many years. Relationships like these are built on trust, shared values, and a commitment to delivering quality every step of the way.

We’re grateful for the opportunity to continue building together and can’t wait to see what’s ahead.

Last week, and for the second year in a row, Chris, Vo, Devin and Brandon hit the links at the Oregon-Columbia Chapter Summer Golf Tournament. The theme was America's 250th Birthday, and these guys really dressed the part. Our Schommer team played well, placing 4th overall. Chris can hit the ball so hard it turns to smoke!

CIEF: Construction Industry Education Foundation hosted the 2026 Oregon Design-Build Competition in Salem this May, with Schommer & Sons sponsoring Franklin High School for the second year in a row. Our Franklin team consisted of 14 students who designed and built a shed that will now be utilized at their school. Devin Bentz, our Superintendent, mentored the students through the process. He said he appreciated how excited the students were about building, and he saw their confidence grow as they learned new skills and worked together as a team. The students came away from their experience with a well-rounded view of what a career in construction can look like.

Schommer & Sons also awarded two scholarships to students. Devin expressed that speaking with these students and hearing about their ambitions was incredibly motivating.

Congratulations to everyone who participated in the competition this year!

Our very own Chris and Vo attended the world's largest mass timber event, the International Mass Timber Conference, held in Portland last month. Schommer & Sons will be using dowel laminated timber (DLT) on an upcoming project (examples of DLT featured in the last two images of the carousel). The conference was a great space to see where the construction industry is headed with mass timber.

Schommer & Sons recently completed restoration work on the Red Doors of the Trinity Episcopal Cathedral in Portland. Preserving the original craftsmanship on these historic doors was of the upmost importance.

Our Superintendent, Devin Bentz, shared a few words on his experience with this project: "I am proud to have played a part in preserving a piece of Portland’s history. Restoring these original exterior doors meant honoring the craftsmanship of the past while ensuring they’ll stand strong for years to come."
