Woofter Bolch Architecture We are driven to create architecture that is environmentally sound, grounded in place, and responsive to its time and culture.

Based in Portland, Oregon, Woofter Bolch Architecture is a collaborative design practice equally committed to providing excellent design and outstanding client service. We emphasize optimism, simplicity, clarity, and craft in our work with a process that is focused on the best interests of the project. Our practice is set up as an open studio that encourages teamwork and impromptu dialogue in an environment in which creativity, diligence, and humor are all highly valued. We approach all of our projects with an open mind and are inspired by and learn from the diverse knowledge and expertise of those we work with, from clients to craftspeople, from consultants to contractors. Our studio methodology centers on an iterative, interactive design process that includes learning from all project team members, testing options, and together discovering appropriate and innovative solutions. It is a shared exploration with the client—a collective journey that involves both analysis and synthesis, both finding and making. Through thoughtful design we seek to enrich the human spirit, improve well-being and strengthen community. Our process emphasizes iteration and the importance of craft. We explore and test concepts using a variety of tools, from analog to digital, from physical to virtual. We see design as an accumulation of knowledge that gets richer with more input and exploration.

On the boards: new triplex in North Portland.

We have been working with a client to explore the opportunities for new infill housing created by the City of Portland’s Residential Infill Project (RIP). This project studies three units on a North Portland lot that is along a new transit corridor. The project's unique building form responds to the site's angled geometry and special zoning parameters.

We love investigating the potential to add density and more affordable infill housing provided by the RIP codes.

A closer look at the newly-completed All-User Locker Room at the Portland Community College Health Technology Building, designed in collaboration with JSA/MIXdesign

One of the first of its kind in the country, the new space transforms the typical locker-room experience into one of increased privacy, comfort, and shortened wait times for diverse students, faculty, and staff across age, disability, gender, neurodiversity, and religion.

The All-User Locker Room includes three zones, providing shared lockers; fully enclosed wet and dry changing rooms with showers and fold-down benches; and an all-user restroom with shared handwashing and grooming stations and full-height accessible private stalls. Two smaller traditional men’s and women’s locker rooms provide users an alternative option.

We are excited to announce that our design for a 3-unit middle housing prototype, the Cincinnati 3-Way (C3W), won two first-place awards in the Cincinnati BuildReady Design Competition. This international open-call competition sought creative approaches to new types of middle housing to help address Cincinnati’s affordable housing shortage with the ultimate goal of creating pre-approved middle housing plans that are contextual, attainable, and scalable.

Our design, named in honor of a local culinary favorite, is a prototype for a three-unit building that respectfully draws from the city’s wonderful neighborhood context while also being creatively distinct. Conceived to provide a thoughtful mix of unit types that support a variety of living arrangements and income levels, the C3W is configured to accommodate all stages of life. It incorporates three types of unit design across three floors of living space to enhance affordability through a range of price points.

The competition received 92 submissions from 63 teams across 29 cities, highlighting how broad an issue affordable housing is. Although the design and competition were specific to Cincinnati, the ideas explored could be applied to other cities facing similar problems.

We are particularly proud that our design received the Best 3-Family Award from both the Community Stakeholder and Professional Panels (and we were particularly excited at the chance to meet Mayor Aftab Pureval Aftab Pureval)!

We are excited to share that our award-winning "birch" ADU prototype will be included as part of the upcoming Unseen Portland Architecture exhibit sponsored by Design Portland.

Opening Reception:
Thursday, September 3, from 5-8pm
JK Gill Building, 408 SW 5th Ave, Portland

The Birch ADU is a compact, sustainable housing prototype originally developed for the 2021 Salt Lake City Empowered Living Design Competition where it won the Grand Prize in the ADU category. Tailored for alley-access lots but adaptable to any urban site, the design reimagines how we use backyard spaces — balancing affordability, accessibility, and community connection.

It was such a pleasure seeing the new .systems headquarters buzzing with energy for their open house last night!

We're so happy with how the skylit atrium and stair turned out, perfectly matching our scale study model. It's been awesome to hear from the Alliant team how warm, open, and bright the new space is for them to work in. We can't wait to share more in the coming weeks

Thanks to our great partners on this project:

In-process study for a backyard T-shaped addition (and potential future alley-facing ADU) on an amazing site in SE PDX. The project, for a creative couple with young children, seeks to engage interior and exterior and create three distinct outdoor spaces of varying scale and character.

Another view of our new ADU project, this one looking toward the alley. A row of clerestory windows in the kitchen aligns with the top of the backyard fence, continuing the geometry of the exterior into the interior. This maintains privacy while bringing in daylight and providing views to the neighboring rooftops across the alley.

In for permit!

We have been working with wonderful repeat clients on a new ADU that will both enhance their backyard and engage the alley behind. The simple, cabin-like form will feature exposed wood throughout and a collection of carefully arranged niches, windows, and skylights that will create layers of space and visually expand the cosy interior.
