Heritage House is a new single-family residence in the Southwest Washington countryside. Its gable roof is inspired by minimal gabled houses that define the architectural vernacular in Underdahl, Norway, a small fishing village on a fjord that is the ancestral hometown of the owners. Scandinavian details of the ancient village have been modernized and adapted to the Washington context.

Wax Orchard North is a new residence located on Vashon Island. Situated in the Puget Sound between Seattle and Tacoma, the region has a quintessential Pacific Northwest feel. The island’s natural beauty and rugged charm inspired the timeless and modern exterior facade, which reimagines the agricultural architectural typology found in the area. The natural cedar siding and gabled roof harken to the past while simultaneously creating an understated Scandinavian influenced simplicity that organically integrates this residence to its rural environment.

Stafford, Oregon lies roughly fifteen miles south of Portland, characterized by rolling pastureland and dense stands of Douglas fir. Homes here are embedded in the landscape, reached by long, meandering drives. The Stafford Residence draws from the quiet beauty of this rural setting and from the sensibilities of Scandinavian country homes, where a close relationship to nature is central to daily life.

Rather than defining a conventional front or back, the house is oriented to engage the landscape in both directions, opening to views north and south. Three distinct wings frame a central outdoor patio and fireplace, forming a sheltered gathering space that extends toward the northern landscape.

Included in last year's Portland Modern Home Tour, this bathhouse in Portland's Alameda neighborhood is built on the footprint of an existing dilapidated carriage house. What was once an unusable eyesore has been replaced by a visually striking community asset.

Constrained to the previous overall volume, a sauna and steam room make for a proper retreat, with a generous gathering space adjacent that allows for large groups to use the space together. The interior is marked by heavy materiality, with dark-stained wood, richly textured stone, and concrete with exposed aggregate making for a calming sensory escape.

Hidden gutters and downspouts at the exterior mean the custom-detailed cedar cladding stays the highlight, and triple-glazed European windows ensure an efficient envelope.
