The Hillsdale renovation was for a young design-loving couple who wanted to complete an extensive interior renovation to a 1953 mid-century home in the SW hills of Portland. The home was originally designed by Portland Architect William Wayman and had many unique design features, but was in need of a thoughtful overhaul. Wayman was known for his MCM (or at that time, Contemporary) designs strewn throughout the Portland metro area.

Arnold Creek Residence is a new luxury single-family house near Lake Oswego, Oregon. A concrete plinth supports hovering flat-roofed volumes, while subtle changes in plane animate the facades, protect the glazing, and create sheltered outdoor spaces. The glassy structure appears to emerge from its tree-filled surroundings, offering generous balconies and outdoor spaces that connect the modern interiors to its beautiful natural setting.

Hospitality and entertaining are priorities for the owner, and many spaces were designed accordingly. The kitchen and dining area of the Arnold Creek Residence seamlessly transitions to its outdoor equivalent through oversized multi-slide doors.

Intentionally crafted moments at the Alameda Bathhouse, which was recently featured in Contemporist.

A steam shower, sauna, and small gathering space compliment a kitchenette in the dark interior.

At the exterior, cedar cladding detailed in unique ways set the tone and contrast triple-glazed black aluminum windows and doors.

All roads lead to nature at Heritage House.

Heritage House is a new single-family residence in the Southwest Washington countryside. Its gable roof is inspired by minimal gabled houses that define the architectural vernacular in Underdahl, Norway, a small fishing village on a fjord that is the ancestral hometown of the owners. Scandinavian details of the ancient village have been modernized and adapted to the Washington context.

Stafford, Oregon lies roughly fifteen miles south of Portland, characterized by rolling pastureland and dense stands of Douglas fir. Homes here are embedded in the landscape, reached by long, meandering drives. The Stafford Residence draws from the quiet beauty of this rural setting and from the sensibilities of Scandinavian country homes, where a close relationship to nature is central to daily life.

Rather than defining a conventional front or back, the house is oriented to engage the landscape in both directions, opening to views north and south. Three distinct wings frame a central outdoor patio and fireplace, forming a sheltered gathering space that extends toward the northern landscape.

We kept things moody throughout this renovation to a midcentury house in Portland’s leafy southwest hills.

An expansive triple-glazed window at the Bridlemile living room brings a heritage maple tree into the space, providing an ever-changing focal point throughout the year. Minimal aluminum frames from and intentional details means nature is the star of the show here.
