One of the largest restoration plantings we’ve done to date, this project included mass plantings of 1700 Salal, Oregon grape, and Western Sword Fern. These native plants will fill in the understory after invasive plants and brush overgrowth was removed from the forest along this customer’s long driveway. Cedars were planted as screening where views of the neighbor's driveway were visible. After our team planted these 1700 plants over the course of a few days, the mulch blower trucks came in to spread screened arborist wood chips around all our new plantings in order to reduce invasives, build soil, and retain moisture for this new forest understory.

Pathways are essential to every design. They are connections…. not only between you and the functional elements of your yard but between you and nature. Without pathways we may forget to interact with the pretty things outside our window but a well designed pathway brings us into contact up close and personal with each plant and pollinator…exposes us to every smell and texture and sound and taste that our new landscape offers…makes us humans once again part of nature rather than observers from afar…shifts our moods, perspectives, and bodies profoundly with every step. In other words, pathways should get you where you are going, yes. But they can also change you along the way.

The 1700 native plants getting planted this week to restore a healthy understory along this long forested driveway. Based on the design by Gregory Landscape Architecture, the Blacklotus team is planting western sword fern, oregon grape, salal and cedars to fill in the holes where overgrowth was removed. This large scale planting of resilient PNW forest locals will help keep the invasive species at bay, foster a supportive habitat for wildlife, and create a welcoming arrival home for these homeowners on Bainbridge Island who are deeply committed to stewarding their forest and supporting their trees. Wish our team luck and good weather….that’s a whole lot of planting but they are up for the challenge!

Today’s training was led by Jon at the Blacklotus plant nursery and covered plant identification, growth habits, microclimates, pruning, and other plant-care knowledge that contributes to the high standards and professional details in our landscape maintenance, enhancements, design, and installs.
