Wrapping up a gorgeous project in Garrett Park, MD. The Millers, a sweet and wonderful young couple, will be hosting ALL the community cookouts this year! We are sure their young son will love climbing all over the new stone work. Maybe we can sway them into installing a nature playscape next.
The Hughes Team had the honor of designing and installing an interior landscape to celebrate the beautiful life of one of our beloved clients. Family and friends of Ms. Anne Rigaux will be taking home these gorgeous plants in her memory. Thanks to the fabulous Suzie Burbage and Chris Rigaux for ideas and support. Also, thanks to the staff at American Plant (River Rd + 495 location). ❤️
We are thrilled to share this sneak peak of a project that the Hughes Team is working on in Alexandria, Va. Below are a few ideas that we developed based on our client's feedback. A high wind warning remains in effect from 3 a.m. today until 6 a.m. Saturday morning. High winds are expected to knock down trees and power lines. Please ensure that your home is prepared by bringing in all outdoor items such as patio furniture and garbage cans that may be blown away or damaged. Please be sure to give our office a call if you need assistance in clean up after the storm passes, our certified arborist is prepared to assess trees affected by this storm.
“Today, structural defects changed a routine maintenance pruning visit into a complete removal. Get in touch with Hughes Tree Services Division for an assessment of your trees health and stability, sooner rather than later”. Picture provided by our very own certified arborist, Jimmy Hopkins!
Even as the weather gets colder, don’t let it slow your plans for hardscaping or fence work. As long as the temperature is above 32 degrees, we can do just about any project. Prep work, such as digging footer trenches for stone walls and patios, can even be done in even colder weather. Doing a construction project in the winter will permit you full use of your garden during the first warm days of spring. Just take a look at this beautiful outdoor kitchen! This could be done in your very own backyard. Call us today to get started!

Trees add beauty and value to your property. Fall is a great time to evaluate your current trees, and maybe think about planting new ones. Since the leaves are still hanging on the trees, our Arborist can assess the general health and recommend treatment of your trees if necessary. Fall is also an opportune time to locate dangerous dead wood and problematic branches within your tree canopy, and schedule their removal before winter weather arrives. A comprehensive “In Tree Inspection” is included during pruning and maintenance visits, utilizing our climber’s time in your trees. Hughes landscaping can assist you with tree health care applications, pruning and trimming, removals, and stump grinding of any kind and size. Call us today to schedule a free consultation with our Arborist and to take advantage of your tree’s potential!
A little humor for your Monday Solar Eclipse! Hope you all have equipped yourselves with ISO glasses😎 Have a safe viewing and remember...
Happy Friday😁 If you have not already, please call us to schedule your core aeration!
Core aeration is the best thing you can do to encourage a healthy, drought resistant lawn. Core aerators pull plugs from your turf about the size of your index finger. These holes open up the root system to air, nutrients, new grass seed, and starter fertilizer. Over seeding with high quality endophyte-enhanced grass seed will help develop a turf that is resistant to many diseases, some insects, and the vagaries of Washington weather. If done annually, weeds will become the exception, healthy turf the rule!
Just another day!
A job well done by Hughes Landscaping!

Weeds weeds weeds! Our tip of the decade is to water your beds heavily the day before you plan to weed. Besides being good for your intentional plants it gives the weeds a false sense that you are their friend. They will come out of the ground willingly thinking you will transplant them to your upper beds, all while you are tugging at them! If you can get them before they go to seed it minimizes the effort required for weeks hence.
Hello everyone! Throughout this month we will be pruning azaleas, rhododendrons, photinia, needled evergreens, and other spring flowering shrubs if they are too frisky. You can prune azaleas harshly if they are blocking your way. Sprinkle 3-4 coffee mugs of Hollytone through the shrub after you've cut them to get a good bushy blooming season next year!
It is with deep sadness that we announce the untimely passing of our dear co-worker Jessica. We will forever remember her big smile and contagious laugh. Jessica, you will be truly missed 🌹
We are thrilled to wrap up one of our lovely Spring projects this month. Our dream team of contractors: H. D. Johnson, Inc, A&D Electric, Independent Custom Metalworks + our phenomenal clients helped us transform a declining pressure treated deck and garden, into a series of inspiring outdoor spaces with intriguing design features. We took extra care to ensure that the impressive Oak trees (or their roots) were not harmed in the making of this project. #hugheslandscapedesign #thoughtfuldesign #collaborativedesign #horizontalcedarfence #firetable #cortensteelheatdeflector #ipedecking #shadeplanters #madefortheshade #outdoorlighting #decklove #Dulleselectricfixtures #RHModern
Just a normal work day!!!
If you are having trouble getting grass to grow under your trees, you might want to consider replacing it with a ground cover such as Pachysandra or Vinca, both of which are shade loving. Cut a circular bed around the tree, break up the soil, add some amendments to enrich the soil, install the plants, and finish the look with a layer of mulch. Both plants produce a nice bloom and are attractive, interesting, and hardy.

Hughes Landscaping, we do Clean up, edging, and mulching, and Tree work along with TONS of other services as well!!
Hughes Landscaping to the rescue! Our 1930's family home in Washington DC was in dire need of everything exterior. The home is now a rental and having had the interior work completed enough to rent I needed to start work on the exterior. John Hughes and team were so wonderful to work with and made the process seamless. All exterior entry stairs and walkways were capped, the original 1930's driveway was transformed with pavers, all new railings and a new rear patio that expands the width of the house was completed. Hughes Landscaping also removed trees and revamped the front and back yards. The new front plantings have been installed and I look forward to finishing up the rear landscaping in the spring of 2017. I wish I could add the before photos... the results are quite striking!
Another Well Appreciated compliment from a current customer!
We are exceptionally pleased with the results of this project beginning with Dave's detailed suggestions, the friendliness and the courtesy of Norma and the others whenever we called. For the expertise, hardwork, and friendliness of Sal and the two other workers and for finding alternate solution to drainage issues in the backyard. We will happily recommend Hughes to our friends and call upon you for future projects.
Another appreciated compliment from a satisfied customer!!!
This is a belated letter of thanks for Hughes' very fine drainage and related landscaping work on our property this July.
As you know from knowing Cabin John well, including all the tear-down/in-fill construction, drainage can be a perennial issue. This spring, with the dramatic rains, a number of minor and hidden problems became overwhelming for us. I was happy to look to Hughes to work with me to solve these problems.
Specifically, it was a pleasure to work with Tim Gardner in designing viable solutions for the long-term. Working with him, his crew leader "Chicken," and the entire crew was a pleasure. It wasn't just the quality of work; it was the easygoing collaboration that made this so successful.
We all now sleep better and don't shudder every time a thunderstorm is forecast. (So long as the power stays on. But that’s another story.)
Thank you and your team again.
Since the weather is mild, we will begin mowing the first week of April. We consider the start of the 2017 season to be official with the first round of lawn mowing. If you want crabgrass control and have yet to authorize it, remember that control is most effective when a pre-emergent is applied before the forsythia finishes blooming.
In March, the days are growing longer and our time for planning and preparation is growing shorter! We begin setting our sights on gearing up for spring in March. Hopefully the fickle weather will not put us behind schedule. Spring is just around the corner.
For those who’ve signed back up for 2017, we thank you for your continued faith in our service. We hope you will continue to recommend us to your friends and neighbors! And cheers to our 34th year!!
While the weather often prevents our crews from being outside, it is a good time to call us for an estimate. If we are already doing all the gardening at your place and you like the quality of our work, please pick up the phone and recommend us to your neighbors; if you have recommendations for improving our quality, please pick up the phone and advise us.
We hold great gratitude for our customers who helped our workforce to remain stable again in 2016. It is rewarding to see our employees develop their passions year after year. When the workers find out that you recommend their work to your neighbors, it is doubly gratifying to see the enthusiasm with which they take on the care of your friends’ and neighbors’ yards and gardens.
We did it again!!!
As we continue to do our major planning for the year, we welcome your comments or requests. If you need gardening, grass cutting, fertilizing, lawn care, design, landscaping, irrigation, tree care, hardscaping, fencing, gutter cleaning, or just plain old advice, we will be there for you.
