The Golden State Mutual Life Insurance Building is a lasting symbol of Black entrepreneurship, resilience, and architectural excellence.

Designed by Paul Revere Williams, the building served as the headquarters of Golden State Mutual Life Insurance Company, founded in 1925 by William Nickerson Jr., Norman O. Houston, and George A. Beavers Jr. to provide life insurance to African Americans who were routinely denied coverage. It later became the largest Black-owned business in the Western U.S. and was designated a Historic-Cultural Monument in 2011.

Between 2014 and 2015, the building underwent an extensive renovation, with Spectra Company playing a key role. The project restored the original 1949 exterior and key interior spaces, upgraded building systems, and integrated the structure into the Legacy Plaza campus for the South Central Los Angeles Regional Center, a nonprofit providing lifelong support, advocacy, and service coordination for individuals with developmental disabilities and their families.

Equally significant are the historic murals housed within the building, which depict pivotal moments in African American history and culture. Preserved as part of the renovation, these murals remain a powerful artistic and educational element of the site—reinforcing the building’s role as both a cultural landmark and a living community resource.

Through this work, Spectra is honored to be part of the team that helped ensure that a place rooted in dignity, artistry, and opportunity continues to serve future generations.

2nd Baptist Church Documentation Workshop & Tour (Lunch Included)

Designed by Paul R. Williams and built in 1926, this National Register Romanesque Revival Church is most significant for its contribution to the African American history in Los Angeles. Martin Luther King, Jr. preached at the church many times and considered it his “West Coast home”.

The church was able to reopen its main sanctuary after being closed for several years due to structural deterioration. A grant from the African American Cultural Heritage Action Fund enabled a preservation team comprised of a historic architect, historians, structural and MEP engineers and documentation specialists to complete an HSR, conditions survey and provide conceptual design recommendations to enable to the church building to preserve the church and continue to serve the congregation for generations to come.

The team will lead a presentation on the HSR, workshop documentation, and design recommendations as well as review of the grants obtained. After the presentation, a tour of the church building will follow.

Schedule: Saturday, January 24th

9:45 Check-In @ Entrance
10:00 Welcome/Presentation
The team will lead a presentation on the HSR, documentation, and design recommendations as well as a review of the grants obtained.

Deeply honored and grateful to Mayor Tim Sandoval and the City of Pomona for recognizing Spectra Company as Business of the Year at last week’s State of the City event. 🌟

Ray and Michelle Adamyk were proud to accept the award on behalf of our entire team — a team rooted right here in Pomona, the 7th largest city in Los Angeles County and the home of our headquarters at The Union on Garey (the restored 1922 Pomona YMCA).

Pomona is more than where we work — it’s our community, our history, and our daily inspiration. Thank you for celebrating the impact of preservation, storytelling, and the power of investing in place.

Here’s to continuing the work of restoring the spaces that shape Pomona’s past, present, and future. 🛠️❤️

The story of the Sycuan people is one of remarkable resilience and renewal. Despite generations of displacement and hardship, the Tribe continues to thrive—honoring its deep roots while building a strong and vibrant future.

In 2025, Spectra Company partnered with the Sycuan Tribe to restore their historic church—an enduring symbol of faith, culture, and renewal that continues to honor their remarkable journey. This sacred space stands as a testament to the Tribe’s strength and unity, preserving not only a historic structure but the living spirit of a community that has endured and flourished through change.

Through restoration and cultural preservation, the Sycuan Tribe ensures that their traditions, language, and stories remain alive for generations to come. Their leadership continues to inspire a future grounded in heritage, resilience, and hope.

A recent feature in Los Angeles Magazine highlighted Spectra Company’s craftsmanship and care in preserving one of Downtown LA’s most beloved landmarks—the Bradbury Building.

Most signs fade with time—but some stories last generations. The sandstone sign welcoming visitors to Downtown LA’s Bradbury Building has stood strong for 132 years. Recently, Spectra Company gave it a thoughtful restoration, replacing a damaged “Y” and reviving the Victorian-era craftsmanship that defines the 1893 landmark. Spectra has been working with the Bradbury Building on numerous projects since 2016.

“The Y had just failed—the sandstone was delaminating and ready to fall,” explains Reuben Lombardo, Spectra’s Senior Preservation Estimator. Using silicone molds and careful artistry, his Pomona-based team recreated missing letters and ornamental ribbons, ensuring the sign remains as timeless as the building itself.

Spectra’s partnership with the Bradbury is ongoing—the team returns annually to maintain its beauty and integrity. As the West Coast’s largest historic restoration contractor, Spectra brings the same dedication to over 100 projects a year, including the Biltmore Hotel, Mission San Gabriel, and Apple Tower Theater.

“When the Bradbury was built, they spared no expense,” Lombardo says. “It’s still one of the most beautiful buildings in Los Angeles—and it deserves to stay that way.”
