The flowering stage is beautiful but this is the real payoff to a field full of sunflower. Each seed transforms into a 2-4 lb mass of between 1000-2000 seeds which will be held high above the ground by their strong stalk while they dry for the next few weeks. During this time , and for months to come, they will be an available food source for all types of birds and other small game species.
