With this beautiful fall weather, we’ve been screening just about every day! 🍂

Not only do we screen all of our own material, but we also help other businesses with their screening needs, whether it’s topsoil or compost.

Last week, we wrapped up a screening job for Manitowoc County, and this week we’re working with Holland Landscape Supply out of Oostburg!

If this weather holds up, we’re hoping to fit in a few more screening jobs before the season wraps up.

Fall is the best time to get a start on your lawn projects!

🍃 The combination that works especially well when top dressing:

For an established lawn, a very effective renovation approach can be:

Core aerate → slit seed → top dress with compost → water → apply Lawn King

Aeration creates openings into the soil. Slit seeding directly sows grass seed into the soil. Compost can work into those openings, while grass seed gets better contact with the soil. Then later applying Lawn King gives an extra boost of nutrients custom formulated for the soil in our area by Busy Bee Compost.

We aim for a small layer of compost top dressed annually or periodically rather than putting down a very thick layer at once.

⚠️ One important consideration

Not all compost is equally suitable for lawns and that is why we are committed to Busy Bee Compost. We use a mature, screened, quality compost that is free of w**d seeds, contaminants and excessive salts. Fresh or poorly finished compost can actually cause problems.

⏰ Quick disclaimer:
Don’t expect compost top dressing to instantly make a lawn green. Its biggest value is improving the soil and growing environment over time. It is one of those investments that don’t have an instant benefit but overtime makes a big impact.

We got some results in from Cutting Edge Property Maintenance!!

A little summer update!
We have been screening compost at our Mosinee location, turning rows in Sheboygan and Manitowoc, and gearing up to start screening some compost in Sheboygan!

One of the coolest parts of Busy Bee is learning about all the jobs that our compost gets to be used for. We delivered over 100 yards of compost to Landmark Landscaping to be used for a Kohler job!

As we keep expanding & growing, that means we’re also upgrading our equipment to be more efficient! Our new screener has a 1/2 inch drum which means our compost will be more fine than it already was.
We will also be offering a screening service for anyone looking or the ability to lease out our screener!
