Westchester is in the middle of a heat wave and air conditioning systems across the county are working harder than they have all season.

Tuesday Tips with A. Borrelli

Smarter lawn watering starts with one simple change: timing.

Early morning is the sweet spot. Between 6am and 8am the temperature is low, the wind is calm and water actually reaches the roots instead of evaporating into the air. Afternoon watering sounds productive but most of it never makes it to the ground.

The other thing worth knowing is that daily light watering does more harm than good over time. Grass roots grow toward water. Shallow frequent watering keeps roots close to the surface where heat and drought do the most damage. Deep watering two to three times a week pushes roots further down into cooler more moisture retentive soil. The result is a stronger lawn that actually needs less water to stay healthy.

One last thing worth mentioning. If there is a sprinkler system running on a schedule, it is worth double checking that it is not set to run during or after rain. It happens more than most people realize and it adds up over a summer.

Tuesdays Tips with A. Borrelli
Fruit flies showing up in your kitchen? Here is the hack most people do not know about.

Grab a small cup or bowl, pour in a little apple c***r vinegar and add two drops of dish soap. The vinegar draws them in and the soap breaks the surface tension so they cannot escape. Leave it on the counter overnight and you will be amazed.

Now here is the part most people miss. If you are seeing fruit flies and there is no obvious food source nearby, check your drains. Kitchen and bathroom drains collect organic buildup over time and that is actually one of their favorite breeding spots. A slow or smelly drain is worth paying attention to.

The cup trick handles the ones you can see. The drain is where they are coming from.
