Simpson Door Company 7803 fir double doors with seedy baroque glass. Painted in house using Sherwin-Williams emerald urethane 6348 Raynard outside and platinum inside. Schlage Locks handleset. What do you think about the smooth finish on wood doors?

Working on Sunday! Painting another set of fir doors a bold color. This had one coat of automotive prime and 90 minutes of block sanding with 320 grit. Problem areas were filled with an amazing filler called platinum, unfortunately the first coat of paint caused the putty to swell and show through. You could also see where the primer had some partial burn thru’s and the wood swole up. So the door got wet sanded with 600 grit and re-shot. We’ll see how she comes out today 🤞

It is with a heavy heart that we mourn the passing of our retired entry door installer/technician/trainer/mentor Rod Knowlden. We learned a lot from him and miss his character. The good lord got another talented carpenter. Rest in piece sir. 😿

Pt 3: the last coat of automotive prime was wet sanded with 600 grit and then sprayed with a (meticulously cleaned) airless sprayer a special color match of tricorn black from .
Because dark colors don’t hold up well and latex scratches easily, we lightly wet sanded the doors with 600 grit again, and then top coated with 450 satin clear because it has a harder surface and UV protection to keep the black from chalking as fast. It also lays down smoother than latex.

Pt 2: after the heavy coats of primer came hours of block sanding with 180 grit coated abrasive. You can see where the doors and panels were bucked coming out of the factory sanding equipment leaving a low spot that had to be blended out. Once everything was puttied and sanded, another coat of primer was applied with a dash of thinner to help it lay down smoother and reduce sanding time before paint.
