Sometimes the hardest part of remodeling is figuring out where to start.

You know the bathroom feels dated.
You know the kitchen isn't working anymore.

Facebook brought this one back up today from my old house, and it reminded me just how much went into this bathroom before a single tile ever made it onto the wall.

This was our **hall bathroom**—and looking back, I probably set myself up for failure. 😂

Because if you're going to go this far on the hall bath… what the hell are you supposed to do when it's time to remodel the primary bathroom?

At the time, I knew I wanted something different. I had this 4x16 tile and had found a mosaic I really liked, but I wasn't exactly sure how I wanted to put everything together.

What you don't see are the **several hours I spent on my garage floor experimenting with the layout.**

I tried the herringbone on a diagonal.

Changed it.

Tried different horizontal and vertical orientations.

Changed it again.

Straight stack. Staggered. Back to herringbone.

I kept moving tile around until I finally landed on this design.

Now look closely at the pictures—because this is where the difference between simply installing tile and actually **designing an installation** starts to show.

Look at the symmetry around that mosaic diamond.

Look at how the pencil trim frames it.

Follow the herringbone pattern into the corners and watch how it carries onto the adjoining walls.

Look at where the cuts land and how the entire installation relates back to the centerpiece.

**None of that happened by accident.**

And that's really why I'm sharing an old project like this.

When I'm designing a bathroom for a homeowner today, this is still how my mind works.

I'm not just thinking about how we're going to get tile onto a wall. I'm thinking about where the pattern starts. Where it finishes. What happens when it reaches a corner. Where the focal point lands. What you'll see when you first walk into the room. And whether the entire space looks intentional when we're finished.

Because when you're investing in a custom bathroom, **“close enough” shouldn't be part of the design.**

Sometimes the details that make the biggest difference are the hours you'll never see.

But you'll see the results of those hours every single day.

PROJECT SPOTLIGHT | Sometimes the best details aren't part of the original plan.

When I first met with Frank and Diane about their primary bathroom remodel in St. Joseph, this wall above the tub was supposed to have a round opening looking through to the other side.

There was just one problem.

The other side of that wall is the toilet area, and their plans included a cabinet above the toilet. The original idea simply wasn't going to work.

So instead of abandoning the idea altogether, we changed direction.

We turned the opening into a recessed circular niche with a bullnose edge. Then we carried the geometric mosaic tile into the circle to turn it into an architectural feature.

It looked good.

But I kept looking at it and thinking it needed one more thing.

Diane had chosen this beautiful metal tree to sit against the mosaic, and I knew that if we could illuminate the entire circle, that tree wouldn't just hang on the wall—it would become a piece of art.

Making that happen turned out to be considerably more complicated than the idea itself. We had to get power into the wall, create a concealed location for the driver, and ultimately special-order a continuous ribbon-style LED system so there wouldn't be individual diodes visible around the circle.

None of that was part of the original plan.

But look at the progression in these photos.

That little idea went from an opening in a wall… to plywood… to mosaic… to a metal tree… and finally to one of my favorite details in the entire bathroom.

That's what custom remodeling means to us.

Not choosing Package A, B, or C.

Not building the same bathroom over and over again.

It's listening to the homeowner, solving the problems that come up along the way, and sometimes putting a little more into a project simply because you know that extra detail is what will make the room special.

Every home is different.

Every homeowner is different.

And we think their remodel should be, too.

This St. Joseph primary bathroom went through a complete transformation — and this is exactly why we love remodeling.

We took an outdated bathroom, opened up the shower, reworked the layout, and rebuilt the space around the homeowners and how they wanted to use it.

The finished project features a large frameless glass shower, dramatic full-height tile, an illuminated shower niche, custom double vanity with vessel sinks, statement pendant lighting, heated tile flooring, and carefully selected finishes throughout.

But the finished pictures only tell part of the story.
