Crape myrtles have their own beauty, no argument there. But here’s the question worth asking: why do we keep planting an Asiatic tree when there’s a native option that’s more drought tolerant, less disease-prone, lower maintenance, and a magnet for hummingbirds and butterflies?
Desert willow is that option. It’s native from far East Texas all the way to El Paso, which means it’s built for pretty much anywhere in this state.
There’s a cultivar called ‘Bubba’ with a more upright form and especially vivid blooms. But honestly, the straight species is hard to beat. That sprawling, architectural shape gives it a character all its own.
Sometimes the best specimen tree for your yard has been native this whole time.
