This house was built before most homes in Indiana had electricity. Now it has a chandelier.

She’s been sitting on the bricks in Zionsville Village since the late 1800s, so we tried to show some respect. We kept the character, added about 1,200 square feet, and took everything else down to the studs.

The rotting porch ceiling did not make the cut. Some things are historic. Some things are just old.

This basement spent years alone with a furnace and a support pole. Good listeners, both of them. Terrible conversational...

This basement spent years alone with a furnace and a support pole. Good listeners, both of them. Terrible conversationalists.

We brought in some light, some carpet, and a couple of barn doors.

Now people come downstairs on purpose.

If your basement is still listening for footsteps on the stairs, we should talk.

1. The Bungalow Volute
An oak handrail that curls into a volute over a curved starting step, with white balusters. It looks like it has always been in this historic bungalow.

2. The Black Box Newel
Square box newel posts and handrail in black, oak treads, white risers. Modern farmhouse with some backbone.

3. The White Straight Run
One straight flight with white box newels, square balusters, and an oak handrail. Clean and quiet.

4. The Ebony and Oak
Ebony-stained treads over red oak risers, with a custom black metal rail. The bold one.

The layout wasn't the problem.

We don't get to say that very often. This 1980s Zionsville kitchen had everything in the right place. It just didn't have enough room, or anywhere to put anything.

So we left the layout alone and fixed the rest.

We opened the kitchen up to the room beside it. We wrapped the cabinets around the corner to pick up the storage this house never had. And we gave them cabinets that look like they came from this century.

It started with the kitchen. Then it spread to the basement for another renovation.

Getting asked back is our favorite kind of review.
