This backyard in Saratoga had grass and a back door. Now it has a room.

Open gable pavilion with exposed truss work overhead, a dark painted ceiling, and a fan to keep the air moving. Dining table seats six under full cover. Built-in entertainment area along the back wall with a mounted TV. Concrete pad tied right into the house with sliding door access, so stepping outside feels like walking into the next room, not leaving the house.

Rain doesn’t end the evening. Sun doesn’t run you inside at 2 PM. The family uses this space from the first warm day in spring through Thanksgiving, and when friends come over, nobody ends up back in the living room.

That’s the whole point. When your backyard is designed like a room, you treat it like one.

Two ways to extend your outdoor season. Same goal, different investment.

A firepit is the entry point. Stone surround, seating around it, open sky above. It’s where your kids roast marshmallows on a Friday night in October and where you sit with a drink after they go to bed. It fits into a patio design without dominating it, and the cost is a fraction of what a fireplace runs. This one in Brownsburg anchors a stamped concrete patio with a dining area, lounge seating, and landscaping that ties it all together.

A fireplace is a commitment. Full stone construction, covered structure overhead, wood ceiling, TV mounted above the mantel. It becomes the centerpiece of the entire outdoor space. You’re not sitting around it. You’re sitting in front of it, under cover, with radiant heat that makes 40-degree evenings feel comfortable. This one sits on the border of Plainfield and Avon under a timber-frame pavilion, and it gets used well past the point most people have gone inside for the year.

Both push your outdoor season in both directions. Spring starts earlier. Fall lasts longer. The question is how you want to spend that time and what makes sense for your backyard.

Three projects. One family. That’s not a marketing strategy. That’s trust.

Jon and his family live in Prestwick, right off the golf course in Avon. They love the location. But the house was stuck in the 1980s. So instead of moving, they called us. Three times.

First, we opened up the galley-style kitchen. Dark cabinetry, granite countertops, glass-front uppers, and a layout that finally lets more than one person be in the room at a time.

Then the master bathroom. Frameless glass shower with marble tile, a skylight overhead, and a space that went from stale to spa.

Then the four-season room. Leather chairs, a view of the pool, and industrial exhaust fans so Mr. Nolan can enjoy his ci**rs year-round without Mrs. Nolan having a word to say about it.

Jon holds the record as BGW’s only “three-peat” for large-scale work. In his words:
“Exceptional craftsmanship, fantastic customer service, and pricing commensurate with the quality of work.”

We don’t take that lightly.

This didn’t start in 2024. It started in 2015.

BGW and Laddscape first worked together at the Belgard Challenge in 2015, and we won. Two companies, different specialties, same standard. That partnership kept going through years of shows, projects, and a mutual respect for how the other team worked.

Along the way, we each kept building. BGW won Best in Show at the Indianapolis Home Show. Laddscape earned the 2023 Garden of Excellence Award from the Indianapolis Landscape Association.

When BGW decided it was time to bring outdoor living fully in-house, we didn’t go looking for the cheapest option. We partnered with the best. Kevin Ladd joined BGW as Director of Operations in 2024, and now every outdoor project we build has landscaping designed into it from the start.

This photo is from the 2025 Flower and Patio Show. That timber-frame pavilion, the paved patio, the landscaping around it? That’s what BGW and Laddscape look like under one roof.

An 1800s farmhouse.

Two original gables that lean toward each other by about 20 degrees. And underground utilities that nobody had accurate records.

This is the kind of project most contractors look at and say, “That’s going to be a problem.”

We looked at it and said, “That’s going to be a puzzle.” And we like puzzles.
The homeowners have taken meticulous care of this place for years. It sits right where Avon, Brownsburg, and Danville meet, and they wanted a four seasons room that looked like it had always been there. Not tacked on. Not an afterthought. Part of the original story.

The challenge was making everything work together when nothing on the back of the house was square. The rooflines had to blend with gables that were never true to begin with. And because of the age of the home, the underground utility records weren’t reliable. We coordinated with the town to locate everything before we broke ground, because on a house this old, assumptions get expensive.

Twenty-seven years of working on historic homes in Hendricks County and central Indiana is what makes a project like this possible. You can’t Google your way through these problems. You solve them with experience, patience, and a team that refuses to cut corners on someone else’s legacy.

The homeowners are thrilled. And honestly, so are we.

Before this project, they had a beautiful old farmhouse with nowhere to sit and enjoy the backyard year-round. Now they do.

This outdoor kitchen was built with wood from the family’s old barn.

The homeowners wanted something that felt like theirs, not something that looked like it came out of a catalog. So we used reclaimed barn wood from their property for the cabinet faces and the TV surround. Every piece has a history that goes back further than the house does.

Behind the barn wood: a Napoleon grill, sink, stainless steel storage and refrigeration,
concrete countertops, and a covered structure with a ceiling fan overhead. Everything you need to cook, eat, and stay outside all evening without going in once.

That backyard went from open grass to the best room on the property.

This is what a kitchen remodel actually looks like on day two.

Wall coming out. Ceiling opened up. Wiring exposed. Popcorn ceiling from the 1970s finally seeing its last day. Debris everywhere, crew member in the corner already working on what comes next.

This is the same Plainfield kitchen we posted last week. The one with the French doors, the quartz island, and the two-tone cabinetry. This is what it looked like before any of that was possible.

Most people never see this part. They see the before photo and the after photo and assume it was a straight line between the two. It’s not. There’s a phase in every renovation where the house looks worse than when we started. That’s normal. That’s the plan working.

Every wall that comes down has been mapped. Every wire you see hanging has been
identified. The mess is controlled. The chaos is temporary. And the popcorn ceiling wasn’t making it out alive either way.

Your backyard deserves better than “someday.”

Built for late nights, loud laughs, and neighbors suddenly showing up.

We build for people done settling. 🔥

Most paver patios fail for the same reason: the base wasn’t compacted right.

The pavers themselves are fine. They don’t crack, they don’t wear out. What happens is the gravel underneath wasn’t compacted to the right density before the pavers went down. Over two or three Indiana freeze-thaw cycles, the base shifts. Pavers settle unevenly. Gaps open up. Water pools where it shouldn’t.

Getting the compaction right isn’t complicated. It just takes patience and the right equipment. You compact in lifts, test the density, and don’t move forward until the base is solid. Skip that step or rush it, and you’ll see it in the patio within a couple of years.

This is our crew hand-setting pavers on a properly compacted base. Every paver gets placed by hand, cut tight against the house, tapped into position. You can see the hot tub pad and pergola going up in the background. The whole space is one project, designed and built together.

The surface is the part you see. The base is the part that matters.

1970s kitchen. Low ceilings, oak cabinets, barely enough light to see what you were cooking. The layout kept everyone boxed in, and the back of the house felt completely cut off from the yard.

We took out a wall, opened the floor plan, and added French doors that lead out to a new deck. The kitchen went from the darkest room in the house to the brightest.

Two-tone cabinetry. Quartz waterfall island with seating. Subway tile backsplash. And now, instead of staring at a wall while you cook, you’re looking through French doors at your backyard.

Same house. Fifty years of difference.
