Cali Bear Tip of the Week 🐻🚪

If you have a door in your house that only closes when you lift it, shove it, pull it toward you, and whisper exactly the right combination of words... that’s probably your sign.

A stubborn door can be something simple like hinges or hardware, or it can point to an issue with the jamb, alignment, swelling, or the way it was installed.

Either way, fighting with your door every day shouldn’t just become part of the routine.

Cali Bear Tip of the Week 🐻🔨

Sometimes you come across a repair and can tell somebody was really determined to make it work. 😂

The problem is, fasteners only work as well as the material they’re going into. If the wood is split, deteriorated, or already failing, adding more screws usually doesn’t solve the underlying issue.

A proper repair might mean replacing the damaged material, correcting the connection, or using the right hardware for the job.

Cali Bear Project of the Week 🐻🔨

This front porch railing had definitely seen better days, so we replaced it with a cleaner, sturdier setup that fits the house much better and gives the whole entry a fresh look.

Not every job has to be a huge remodel. Sometimes it’s just one thing around the house that’s been bothering you every time you walk past it. 😂

🐻 Cali Bear Tip of the Week

There’s a time to patch something up, and there’s a time to actually fix it.

One of the things we run into pretty often is a small problem that was covered up years ago instead of repaired. By the time we get there, the original issue is still hiding underneath, usually with a few new friends. 😂

Caulk is an incredibly useful part of a properly finished job, but knowing where and when to use it is just as important as knowing how.

Cali Bear Tip of the Week 🐻🍂

Rainy season will be here before we know it, and fall is a good time to check a few things around your property before small issues turn into bigger repairs.

Loose deck boards, wobbly railings, leaning fence posts, soft spots, and rot near the base are all things worth paying attention to this time of year. Clearing away leaves and debris and handling weak spots early can help everything hold up better once the rain starts.

🐻 Cali Bear Project of the Week!

Not every custom project has to be a deck, addition, or remodel. Sometimes you just have an idea and need someone willing to figure out how to build it.

Both of these projects were built specifically for cats. One turned an existing shed into their own dedicated space, and the other was a custom outdoor cat bench with access points and storage built right into it.

Cali Bear Tip of the Week 🐻🔨

Dry rot can sneak up on you, especially on decks, stairs, siding, and other areas that stay exposed to moisture.
Sometimes it’s obvious, but a lot of the time the damage starts underneath or behind what you can see. Soft or spongy wood, peeling paint, dark staining, cracking, or crumbling are all signs worth paying attention to.

Catching it early can mean the difference between replacing a board or two and having to rebuild a much larger section later.

With summer in full swing, I figured I'd share a few common signs that a deck may need some attention. Hopefully this helps someone catch a problem before it turns into a major repair.

Deck rebuild in Swansboro, just off Buckboard Road.

Almost a year ago, a tree fell on this home and caused extensive damage to the deck and roof structure. After months of engineering, permitting, and back-and-forth with the insurance company, we were finally able to begin rebuilding it.

I want to give a huge shout-out to Mitchell Deacon with Deacon Engineering for putting together the engineered plans for this project. Mitchell was responsive, timely, and great to work with throughout the process. Anyone looking for a knowledgeable and affordable local engineer should definitely give him a call.

I also want to thank Berco Redwood, especially Nate Berry, who I’ve worked with for years. Nate helped us order and coordinate all of the structurally required and WUI-compliant materials needed to complete this project properly.

This deck had vines thicker than some of the posts, a pretty serious hole from the tree impact, and framing that was already beginning to fail. Seeing it transformed into a properly engineered, WUI-compliant deck has been extremely rewarding.
