Replacing fan belts is a relatively common task for many service technicians. Normally the size is stamped on the belt. Common Mistake to Avoid - Damaging the threads of a bolt, nut, or flare nut. Working with older equipment involves working with older nuts, bolts, and flare nuts. When taking these items off and putting them back on, care should be taken not to force them—as this could easily damage the threads. If you can not engaged the first few threads by hand, do not force it on with a wrench. Remove it and find out why. You may simply need to clean the threads or you may need to re-position it to get the threads aligned. Once the threads are damaged it will need to be replaced, which could be a issue on some jobs.

Common Mistakes to Avoid - Not checking for a refrigerant leak at a service valve after removing your manifold gauges. On older service valves, the valve stem or the access port may not seal properly when put back into its back-seated position. This may go unnoticed and cause refrigerant to leak out of the system after removing your manifold gauges. It is a good practice to always check for leaks before leaving the job and always put the caps back on the valve.
