Urban Design Associates

Urban Design Associates UDA is a leader in sustainable regeneration and growth of cities. We do this with a regionally-sensi Our firm was built on principles.

Since our founding year, we have been innovating, testing, and evolving the practice of urban design. We believe that all places, urban and rural, new and established, can have a remarkable sense of place, serve as diverse and exciting places to live, and thrive today and into the future. Our name, Urban Design Associates, implies our collaborative process. Our firm is based on clear communication

and consensus building, rigorous analysis, testing, and coordination to reach workable, creative solutions in challenging contexts, whatever they be. We build on the unique character and positive qualities of each place in which we are privileged to work. By working at many scales, we find ways of coordinating the design of individual buildings; the public spaces they help create; the neighborhoods, towns, and cities of which they are a part; and the regional culture they celebrate into a viable, sustainable, and vital urban tapestry. Our projects are conceived as three-dimensional environments through the use of perspective drawing and modeling techniques in the early stages of conceptual design. The character and quality of building designs and landscape elements become part of the planning process when the most important decisions are made.

Slowing down to sketch and study reveals what data alone never can about the character of streets, buildings, and neighborhoods.

Creating Neighborhoods of Opportunity - UDA's Legacy: For more than 40 years, UDA and Ray Gindroz have helped transform public housing into connected, mixed-income neighborhoods rooted in opportunity and community. From early resident-led work at Diggs Town to the groundbreaking Crawford Square development in Pittsburgh, UDA helped shape the national evolution of HOPE VI and today’s Choice Neighborhoods program. Research now confirms what UDA has long believed — connection, proximity, and neighborhood design matter in creating opportunity for future generations.

Megan O'Hara joins Elizabeth Plater-Zyberk and Neal Payton tomorrow at CNU34 to reflect on HOPE VI and how thoughtful urban design created walkable, mixed-income neighborhoods that redefined public housing. The session precedes economist Raj Chetty's keynote exploring how children who grew up in HOPE VI communities experienced greater long-term economic mobility: powerful proof that good design doesn't just shape places, it shapes lives.

We use design to solve problems.

Some think of design as the last step. We think of it as a way to start a conversation about how we can improve the lives of the people we’re serving, build consensus, and envision a remarkable future.

We dive into the local.

Every project, every place, every community is a unique, immersive experience. Only when we get to know the people, the land, and the life on the street can we begin to design place-based solutions. Here are some photos of a few places we have been recently.
