For Mental Health Awareness Month, we’re highlighting the growing need to integrate wellness into interior design. Across many of the sectors we serve, spaces like quiet rooms, mothers’ rooms, and prayer rooms respond to the increased demand for privacy and emotional support in busy environments.

These spaces are designed to foster a calming connection between users and their surroundings. Strategies we often use include tile mosaics as artwork, finishes with cohesive tonal values, and acoustic wall treatments - all contributing to a sense of comfort, privacy, and restorative calm.

This flat lay features a selection of interior finishes inspired by these principles:
Upholstery: Momentum Textiles & Wallcovering Deka in Copper
Ceramic Tile: Cancos Tile & Stone Reiki in N**e and Audrey Lane Tile Brick & Brush collection, Protea
Luxury Vinyl Tile: Shaw Contract Crossing Paths 5.0 in Thatch
Laminate: Wilsonart Serene Wave
Terrazzo Counter Slab: Concrete Collaborative Pacifica in Alabaster lyc + myc
Paint: Sherwin-Williams Roycroft Rose and Greek Villa
Acoustical Wood Slats: The Wood Veneer Hub Natural Oak with Grey Felt
Hardware: Baldwin Hardware Raised Appliance Pull in Polished Brass
Lighting: Schoolhouse Caldera Flush Mount and Caldera Table Lamp

May is Mental Health Awareness Month.
One in five people will experience a mental health condition in any given year, and everyone faces challenges that can affect their mental well-being.

In honor of this year’s theme, “Turn Awareness into Action,” we’re highlighting a few ways everyone can support their mental health:

🏃‍♂️ Stay Active: Physical activity can help reduce anxiety, depression, and stress by releasing endorphins.

😴 Prioritize Sleep: Consistent, quality sleep is critical for emotional regulation and overall well-being.

🥗 Fuel Your Mind: Nutritious foods can influence mood, clarity, and energy levels.

📵 Take a Digital Break: Reducing screen time helps lower anxiety and depression.

🎨 Find Joy in Hobbies: Creative or restorative activities can boost happiness and provide a sense of purpose.

Just as individual habits impact mental wellness, so does the environment around us. Design can be a powerful tool for healing, and we’re proud to help our communities by creating spaces, like the new Southwood Children's Behavioral Healthcare facility in Pittsburgh, PA. This 66,371-square-foot space was designed using evidence-based principles to provide a welcoming and safe space for children, adolescents, and their families on their journey toward healing.

🎵 Special thanks to singer-songwriter Abigail Rose, who shared a few heartfelt songs to help celebrate the opening of this important new space.

Outpatient volumes in the U.S. are expected to grow 10.6% over the next five years, according to the Advisory Board. IKM Architecture designs with this growth in mind, creating spaces that enhance the patient experience, streamline care delivery, and improve staff efficiency.

Our design for the St. Clair Health Dunlap Family Outpatient Center illustrates this approach

• One-Stop Access to Services
High-use services such as physical therapy, labs, imaging, and the pharmacy are co-located near the entrance to minimize travel distance and improve operational flow.

• Comfort Through Every Step
From arrival to discharge, the layout prioritizes ease of navigation, from the café off the main lobby to appointment and recovery areas.

• Efficiency-Driven Surgical Design
The 6th-floor operating rooms are arranged in a horseshoe layout with centralized sterile processing to reduce turnaround time. Adjacent family areas ensure support throughout recovery.

• Patient-Centered Infusion Experience
Infusion bays line the perimeter of the 7th floor, offering natural light and outdoor views. Guest seating in rooms, waiting areas, and a central pharmacy supports patient care and staff workflows.

The Dunlap Family Outpatient Center embodies a new era of outpatient care that merges convenience, quality, and compassion in every detail. Learn more at the link below.

🌍 This Earth Day, we’re reflecting on the role design plays in shaping a healthier planet and a more sustainable future for all.

At IKM Architecture, sustainability isn’t an afterthought, it’s a mindset that’s woven into every phase of our design process. As proud supporters of the AIA 2030 Commitment, we're focused on reaching carbon-neutral emissions in the built environment. Through thoughtful design, strategic material selection, and collaboration with like-minded partners, we’re making measurable progress, project by project.

These US Green Building Council LEED-certified projects reflect our commitment to high-performance and environmentally responsible design:
• Carnegie Mellon University, Forbes Beeler Apartments | LEED Gold
• Children’s Hospital of UPMC, South Fayette Medical Office Building | LEED Certified
• Allegheny Health Network Wexford Hospital | LEED Certified

🌱 As we look toward a more resilient future, we remain committed to advancing sustainable design to help shape a healthier world, on Earth Day and every day.

With Earth Day just around the corner, we’re celebrating sustainable design – starting with the materials we choose. 🌏

We believe wellness and performance shouldn’t come at the cost of the environment. While it's easy to gravitate toward vinyl flooring for its durability and versatility across various environments, we’re highlighting resilient options that are PVC-free, helping us avoid harmful chemicals without compromising on performance.

🌱 Teknoflor's Naturescapes HPD in Jasper Oak Baywood is a bio-polyurethane based. chlorine-free resilient sheet product.

♻️ Shaw Contract's Art+ Science Experiment in Natural gives us a terrazzo visual, resilient tile utilizing Shaw's Ecoworx formula, making it PVC-free and fully recyclable.

🌿 Biophilic elements also helped shape this earth-inspired palette. Biophilia refers to the innate human connection to nature, and we’ve incorporated indirect references through our finish selections.

⛰️ Interface’s Beaumont Range Collection—Eben Tile in Moss—is inspired by “the ever-changing beauty of mountain trails and our renewed connection with nature.” From their Lost Palms Collection, Cap Rock Tile in Oat recalls the look of volcanic rocks in desert landscapes. These carpet tiles contribute to a low carbon footprint and incorporate recycled content.

🌳 For our upholstery, we selected Red List chemical-free, PVC-free, and PFAS-free options to support healthier interiors and reduce long-lasting environmental impact.

🌸 Carnegie Fabrics selections include Acapella in the shade 6, Botanic Print in the shade 5, Bouquet Print in the shade 2, Hinge in the shade 7, and Petal in the shade 6.

🍃 To reduce VOCs (volatile organic compounds), we turn to Sherwin-Williams ProMar 200 Zero VOC paint. VOCs are emitted as gases from certain materials and can negatively affect indoor air quality and occupant health. Featured paint colors include: Dried Edamame, Oakmoss, Sagey, and Wheat Penny.

Renderings aren’t just about showing what a space will look like – they’re about sparking emotion.

At IKM Architecture, we’ve learned that when people feel the impact of a design before it’s built, everything changes - decisions come faster, stakeholder alignment strengthens, and momentum builds early.

We integrate photorealistic renderings early in the design process because they help clients and communities emotionally connect with the future of a space. Whether it’s a school board envisioning a better learning environment, hospital leadership feeling confident in a refreshed facility, or a community seeing their future take shape—emotion drives progress.

Here’s how renderings have moved projects forward:
• Clarity for Decision-Making: At West Hills Primary School, renderings helped the district visualize interior finishes, enabling the project team to make confident decisions for the installation of a new demountable wall system. As a result, the project stayed on track, and renovations were completed in just one summer.

• Stronger Community Support: For Allegheny Health Network’s Cancer Institute, renderings and animations for the addition to the historic AGH South Tower helped tell a compelling story of clinical excellence and care. As a result, this earned support from community groups and local leaders.

• Leadership Buy-In: At UPMC Passavant, early renderings for the Centers of Excellence captured the vision of a refreshed space. The design garnered enthusiasm from leadership, leading to project approval and funding for the next phase.

Swipe to see five examples where our renderings closely matched the final built environment.

This , we celebrate the 2025 theme "Healthy Beginnings, Hopeful Futures," emphasizing maternal and newborn health and recognizing architecture’s vital role in shaping positive health outcomes from life's earliest moments.

At IKM, we believe designing for healing means creating spaces that nurture not just the body, mind and spirit. Great healthcare design goes beyond aesthetics. It directly supports wellness, reduces anxiety, accelerates recovery, and empowers healthcare providers to deliver exceptional care.

Here are three projects demonstrating how thoughtful design contributes to healthy beginnings and hopeful futures:

Southwood Children’s Behavioral Healthcare | Pittsburgh, PA Designed with empathy, this facility prioritizes emotional safety, comfort, and support for young patients and their families. Social spaces, indoor and outdoor play areas, calming finishes, and nature-inspired elements work harmoniously to ease stress and promote healing.

SEHA Corniche Women’s Hospital | Abu Dhabi, UAE Tailored specifically for women and neonatal care, this hospital creates a serene and dignified environment through intuitive design, privacy-focused spaces, and abundant natural light, significantly enhancing comfort and reducing stress during childbirth and recovery.

Penn State Health Children’s Lancaster Pediatric Center | Lancaster, PA Transformed from a former retail space, this pediatric center is thoughtfully designed to welcome and guide children effortlessly to their care. Natural lighting, playful wayfinding elements like “the River,” and child-friendly design provide a comforting, positive healthcare experience.

Together, these projects demonstrate how thoughtful architecture can meaningfully support and nurture the well-being of mothers, newborns, children, and their families.
