I originally painted the single Wood Duck as a donation for a show that didn't work out. While moving some other paintings around last week I found it again and decide to rework some of it.

The pair came about as a result of the single. I imagine them as the last straggler holdouts making their way down from Canada through the Shenango River Valley here in Western Pennsylvania. They are on a tree line on the west bank and it's a clear clod morning while I'm sitting on a small island over my hand made decoy rig. Are you sitting there with me?

I painted this about a year ago and then put it away. Chesapeake Bay Retrievers are something very special to me.

I've owned two big males. My first, Hershey, I bought from Nancy and Les Lowenthal from Marin County California when we lived out there. I had to buy into a breeding and I had 5th choice. When I called Nancy after the whelping she was so excited because there were 9 puppies. I had the choice of the last female or first choice of the males. I've always favored male dogs so that was an easy choice. Hershey was a 105 pound hunting machine and he lived to about 13. When we moved back to Pittsburgh in 91 we would drop him off at my parents house when we were going out of town and he would sleep at the foot of my Grandmother's bed. She would always say she felt so safe when he was there. Hershey would have torn someone's arm off had they tried to bother her. I used to hunt some Islands in the Allegheny River about 50 miles north of Pittsburgh. I had to canoe across the river to get to them and Hershey would be so worked up that he would swim across next to the canoe on the down current side. Then rearrange my decoy setup to his liking.

My second big Male was Rusty, a rescue through the Chesapeake Bay Retriever Relief and Rescue group. They called and told that a female Chesapeake had been surrendered to the Humane Society and could I go and evaluate her for adoption. I went the next day and found out that she was a he and he was scared and very standoffish. But he warmed up to me quickly. It took some convincing to let me bring him home, and three weeks to get him out of the pound--he had no vaccinations and went after their vet and was scheduled to be put down--but through a lot of effort he came home with me. We were told he was 18 months old but we never really were sure. Rusty was a 95 pound scaredy cat. Terrified of little dogs and loud noises he became a big lap dog. Never meant for hunting he loved kids and playing fetch in the back yard. We lost him as a result of our house fire at Christmas in 2022--still bothers me today. He was fading but I would have liked to have had him for a while longer. Eased him out if you know what that means.

This one is personal to me. A Big Tough 100% American Hunting Dog on a snotty fall morning waiting to get going at the boat ramp.

I haven't posted in a while. Here is something new.

This stemmed from a morning in August. My wife had been enjoying the phone App "Merlin" that identifies birds by their songs. She kept telling me that we had White Breasted Nuthatches in the yard but she had never seen one. Well, one morning there were two on the wild cherry tree that is right outside our dining room window. I took lots of photos of the tree trunk in different light looking for a monochromatic color scheme to match the plumage of the bird. I chose one for reference from about mid morning that day.
