Some historic buildings are known for their architecture. Others are just as famous for the stories people tell about them.

With Halloween approaching, we're taking a look at five American landmarks with fascinating histories and a reputation for being haunted.

From Eastern State Penitentiary's imposing Gothic architecture to the Crescent Hotel's remarkable history of changing uses, each building has a story that extends far beyond its ghost legends.

What interests us most is what these structures have endured. Generations of change, different purposes, and the ongoing effort to protect the craftsmanship that makes them significant.

The ghost stories might bring people through the doors, but it's preservation that allows us to keep exploring their history.

Take a look through the carousel. Have you visited any of these landmarks?

Imagine standing in the same spot more than a century apart and seeing so much change around one building.

These two views of Independence Hall in Philadelphia offer a fascinating look at how a city can grow and change while its historic landmarks remain.

Look closely at the surrounding streets, transportation, and buildings. The differences are hard to miss, but Independence Hall is still recognizable.

That's one of the things we appreciate most about historic preservation. These buildings give us a connection to earlier generations and allow us to experience a piece of history firsthand.

What's the first difference you noticed between these two views?

Some of the best parts of historic buildings are the details you might walk right past.

From the elaborate cast iron at Chicago’s Sullivan Center to the carved stone gargoyles of St. Mary’s Cathedral Basilica in Kentucky, these buildings have plenty worth stopping to appreciate.

But there’s more to these details than appearance. Decorative stonework, stained glass, historic metalwork, and ornamental plaster all require careful attention to keep them in good condition.

We put together a little architecture gallery featuring five remarkable details from buildings across the U.S. Each one offers a different look at the craftsmanship and materials that make historic preservation so interesting.

Take a look through the photos. Which detail is your favorite?

From the MMI Archives 🏛️

Did you know that the stone used to build Berry Hill Mansion came from the very property it sits on?

Built in 1900 in Frankfort, Kentucky, this beautiful Colonial Revival mansion was originally known as Juniper Hill, named for the many red cedar trees that grew on the estate.

More than 120 years later, its original stonework is still one of the features that makes the building so special.

We're looking back at MMI's completed restoration work at Berry Hill, where our team helped care for this historic property.

It's rewarding to have played a part in preserving a building with such a rich story, especially one that continues to welcome people today.

💥 STEPPING UP IN 2026! 💥

Midwest Maintenance Inc. (MMI) has always been a supporter of Piqua Youth Football, and this year they’re stepping it up once again as a PLATINUM SPONSOR! 🏈🙌

MMI has consistently supported our program and the kids who come through it, and we’re incredibly appreciative to see them continue that commitment at the Platinum level in 2026.

Having businesses that continue to stand behind our organization year after year means a lot. It’s not just about a name on a banner; it’s about local businesses choosing to invest in local kids.

Thank you, Midwest Maintenance Inc., for always supporting PYFA and for stepping up BIG again this year!🏈

There is something about historic architecture in the fall. The color changes, the light shifts, and details you may have passed by before suddenly stand out.

For this October look back, we pulled together four previous MMI projects surrounded by autumn color: University of South Carolina Upstate, Historic Poinsett Bridge, Crown Hill Cemetery, and the Gemeinhaus and Distillery.

Different places, different architecture, and plenty of details worth slowing down to notice.

Which one would you want to see in person this fall?

You may notice a little more pink when you see this MMI truck on the road this October.

For Breast Cancer Awareness Month, we are recognizing our partnership with PRG and the people and communities at the heart of this cause.

At MMI, our work takes us into communities across the region, but being part of a community means more than the projects we complete. It also means showing support for the people who live, work, and build their lives there.

This truck carries that message with us wherever the road leads.

What can an older building tell you before you ever read its history?

Quite a lot, if you know where to look.

Weathered masonry, tool marks in stone, layered paint, copper patina, and worn metal connections can all reveal how a structure has been exposed to time, weather, maintenance, and past repairs.

These details do not tell the whole story on their own, but they can help us ask better questions and look more carefully at what is already there.

Take a closer look through the carousel and see which detail you notice first.

Moisture does not always enter a masonry wall from above.

Rising damp occurs when ground moisture moves upward through porous masonry by capillary action. As that moisture travels and evaporates, it can carry soluble salts and contribute to visible tide marks, efflorescence, and deterioration of masonry or adjacent finishes.

The important part is identifying where the moisture is actually coming from. Dampness near the base of a wall can have more than one cause, so the condition and moisture pathway should be properly investigated before a treatment is selected. Simply sealing a damp historic wall can trap moisture rather than address the underlying problem.

Understanding how moisture moves through historic materials is an important part of making thoughtful preservation decisions.

Piqua is more than the city on our address. It is home base.

Midwest Maintenance is headquartered here in Piqua, Ohio, while our restoration work takes our crews to historic buildings and significant properties throughout the Midwest and Eastern United States.

There is something fitting about a preservation company being based in a community where historic architecture remains part of the everyday streetscape. It is a reminder that the buildings around us help shape the identity of a place, whether they are nationally recognized landmarks or familiar structures we pass every day.

No matter where the next project takes us, Piqua is where MMI calls home.
