I used to think spring flowers all went into the ground at about the same time, but these 12 flowers definitely don’t 🌸 A few timing tips I follow:

🦋 YOUR FLOWER GARDEN MAY BE MISSING ONE THING BUTTERFLIES NEED.

You planted the flowers.

The nectar is there.

But butterflies need more than sugar.

Male butterflies often gather at damp soil and mud to obtain sodium and other minerals through a behavior called puddling. They can later pass some of those nutrients to females during mating.

And you can create a tiny puddling station right in your garden.

🌿 HOW TO MAKE ONE

Use a shallow terracotta saucer, plant tray, or small depression in the soil.

Add:

• Coarse sand or garden soil
• A little compost or naturally mineral-rich soil
• Enough water to keep it consistently damp

You want mud—not a pool.

Add a few flat stones nearby so butterflies have dry places to land, bask, and warm their wings.

☀️ WHERE TO PUT IT

Choose a sunny spot close to butterfly-friendly flowers.

Keep it damp during hot, dry weather by adding water whenever the surface begins to dry out.

And don't worry if butterflies don't appear immediately.

Gardeners spend a small fortune every spring on liquid feeds, pest controls, and soil conditioners. I stopped bothering with most of that twenty years ago. Instead, I just let a certain fuzzy, blue-flowered "w**d" pop up wherever it fancies in the veg patch. Tidy gardeners tend to pull it up on sight. That's a shame, because they're throwing away a plant that desperately wants to do half the heavy lifting for them. Once it establishes, it acts as a perfect decoy for the most annoying summer pests. It pulls essential nutrients up from deep in the soil. It sends the local bees into an absolute frenzy. When it gets a bit too tall? I just chop it down for free, nutrient-rich mulch. You can even toss the flowers in your summer salad. If you're breaking your back trying to micromanage your garden, you're working much harder than you need to. Plants want to grow. Sometimes you just need to get out of their way. I wrote down the main reasons why I let this resilient little plant run wild, and exactly how you should be using it once it pops up.
