Not all asphalt mixtures perform the same way—and that’s why the industry continues to evolve how mixtures are designed and evaluated.

Balances Mix Design (BMD) uses performance testing to evaluate how an asphalt mixtures is expected to resist important forms of pavement distress, including rutting and cracking.

Rather than focusing split on meeting a set of volumetric requirements, BMD helps connect mixture design to the performance we expect from the pavement in the field.

It’s one of the ways the asphalt industry is working toward better-performing, more durable pavements.

A smooth road starts beneath the surface.

An asphalt pavement is more than the layer you see when you drive down the road. Its performance depends on how the aggregate, asphalt binder, and underlying pavement layers work together.

The aggregate creates the structural skeleton of the asphalt mixture. The binder holds those particles together, while the mix is designed to balance properties such as durability, rutting resistance, and cracking resistance.

That is where Balanced Mix Design and proper compaction become important. BMD uses performance testing to help develop mixtures that can withstand the specific demands of traffic, climate, aging, and location. Once the mix reaches the roadway, compaction brings the aggregate particles closer together, creating interlock and reducing unwanted air voids.

The result is more than a smooth-looking surface—it is a pavement structure designed and constructed to perform for the long haul.

When you drive down a smooth asphalt road, you’re seeing only one part of a much larger pavement system.

A properly designed pavement considers the materials, mixture, thickness, underlying layers, traffic, climate and expected performance.

That’s why asphalt paving isn’t simply a matter of putting down a layer of “blacktop.” It’s an engineered system designed to carry traffic and perform over time.

Why does pavement density matter? 🛣️

Proper compaction is one of the most important steps in building a durable asphalt pavement. Achieving the right density helps reduce the amount of air voids within the asphalt mixture, creating a tighter, more stable pavement structure.

When asphalt is properly compacted, it can help:
• Improve pavement durability and resistance to traffic
• Reduce permeability and the potential for moisture-related damage
• Minimize the risk of premature cracking, rutting and other pavement distresses
• Extend pavement service life and reduce long-term maintenance needs

Getting density right isn’t simply about making additional roller passes. Temperature, mix properties, lift thickness, rolling patterns, equipment and timing all play a role in achieving consistent compaction in the field.

The goal? Build it right the first time—with the density needed for a pavement that performs for years to come.
