Let’s say you’re replacing a receptacle. Your estimate says, “Replace existing receptacle,” and then explains what’s included: safely isolate the circuit, remove the old receptacle, inspect the wiring and connections, install the replacement, put the cover back on, test it and clean up. Includes the labor and materials. One price for the completed job.

Because the second you separate everything, the customer starts doing the math. “That receptacle costs a few dollars. You were only here for thirty minutes. Why am I paying that much?”

Now the whole conversation is about your hourly pay instead of the work you’re responsible for.

Explain what you’re doing, what’s included and what it costs before you start.

Give them a clear scope and a clear price. That way, they understand what they’re paying for, and you can charge what your business needs to do the job properly.
