Ok folks...got a good one for ya today. Toro 62” zero turn comes in. Customer just says it won’t cut. My first thought is deck belt or something with the PTO. So I jumped on the mower, fired it up and engaged the PTO...blades spun up and everything sounded normal. I took off across the yard and made a couple of passes to put under a normal load when mowing. The blades were definitely spinning...cutting, not so much. The path I had mowed was knocked down, but there was no cutting happening. Pulled into the shop and lifted the mower up to find this...

No lift whatsoever left on the blades, no edge, and roughly an inch shorter in length that they should have been.

Oh the life of a small engine mechanic...ya can’t make this stuff up.

Is your lawn mower not moving as fast as you feel it should? Is it not moving at all when you want it to? This might have a little something to do with it. This is the drive belt off of a MTD rider that came through recently. Another example of why it is so important to either perform routine maintenance on your equipment. Because of the belt being in this bad of shape, it caused the idler/tensioner pulley to actually separate and fall apart upon removal.

Had a machine come in last week that was exhibiting symptoms of a failing ignition coil. Mower would run fine for a while and then start missing to the point of almost not running. It was due for a full service, which was completed first to rule out and KISS (keep it simple stupid) items. Sure enough...the fuel filter was severely clogged causing the problems.

Just a friendly reminder to keep your equipment serviced because there are some places out there that would have jumped at the chance to bill the customer for an ignition coil before eliminating issues with the fundamental things an engine needs to run...clean fuel, clean air, good compression, and a good spark.

Had this come through the shop today. Don't put off having your mowers serviced. Not only will worn blades like these produce a poor cut, below are a few safety concerns of running worn or damaged blades.

1. Sharpening them too many times – If a blade is worn too thin it becomes weak. If you hit something, the blade could break off and injure someone.

2. Bent blade – If a blade is bent it will be out of balance. This can ruin your bearings and scalp your yard.

3. Cracked blade – If a blade is cracked and you hit something it can break off and injure someone.

4. Broken blade – A broken blade will be out of balance and ruin your bearings. You also risk the blade breaking off completely and doing serious property damage or injuring someone.
