A single snake just knocked out power for ~4,500 people.

On June 7, a snake slid into a Statesville Public Power substation in Iredell County, NC, looking for warmth, made contact with energized equipment, and took the grid down for roughly 4,500 customers. Crews needed about 90 minutes to restore service.

It sounds almost comical. It stops being funny the moment you price out 90 minutes of downtime at a hospital, a water treatment plant, a data center, or a manufacturing line.

Here's the uncomfortable part: animal intrusion is one of the most common and most preventable causes of unplanned substation outages in the country. Snakes, raccoons, birds, and rodents trigger thousands of them every year. They are drawn to the warmth and shelter of the equipment, and once they bridge an energized gap, the result is the same every time. Lights out.

The fix is not exotic. It is engineered animal mitigation fencing and barrier systems.

Construction Safety Week's 2026 theme is "All In Together."

For 57 years, our Culture of Care has been grounded in three principles: Care, Courage, and Courtesy.

Different words. Same idea: nobody on a Langston Construction jobsite goes home unsafe because somebody else stayed silent.

What "All In Together" looks like on our jobsites this week, and every week:

→ A dedicated EHS team on every project, not a shared rotation
→ Daily jobsite safety meetings before the first tool comes out

→ A Good Catch Incentive Program that rewards the foreman, the laborer, and the subcontractor equally for stopping work

This year's Construction Safety Week pillars are Recognize. Respond. Respect.

We've earned Presidential Safety Awards from CAGC, AGC/Willis honors, and OSHA recognitions across our building, utility infrastructure, and municipal divisions since 1991.

The most vulnerable point in the electric grid is rarely the one getting the most attention.

Utility operators focus on cyber threats, grid modernization, and system reliability. All critical priorities. But the physical layer, including the fencing, barriers, enclosures, and access controls that protect the assets powering entire regions, is often underfunded until something forces the conversation.

Langston Construction has spent 55 years building that physical layer. NERC CIP-014 compliant physical security systems for transmission owners. Substation construction and hardening. Perimeter protection built for some of the largest utilities in the United States.

This week, our VP of Market Strategy and Partnerships, Steven Hatcher, represents Langston at the Edison Electric Institute Spring T&D MMA Conference in San Antonio. In May, he continues to IEEE PES T&D 2026 in Chicago.

Langston Construction earned 1st Place in the Utility Division at the AGC Construction Safety Excellence Awards (CSEA), a national competition that recognizes companies that truly excel in safety performance.

Unlike awards based solely on incident rates, the CSEA evaluation culminates in a live, in-person presentation before industry judges at the AGC National Convention. Winning 1st place at this level reflects the dedication and accountability of our entire team.
