Today, we pause to remember and honor the brave men and women who gave their lives in service to our country.

Their sacrifice made the freedoms we enjoy possible, and we are deeply grateful.

As we spend time with family and friends this Memorial Day, let’s also take a moment to reflect on those who made it possible.

From all of us at Red Lab Lawn Care, thank you to the fallen heroes and the families who carry their legacy forward. ❤️

We hope everyone has a safe and meaningful Memorial Day.

💭 Let’s talk about nutsedge

Nutsedge is one of the tougher w**ds we deal with because it’s a perennial w**d, meaning it can come back year after year if not treated properly.

A lot of homeowners are surprised when it shows up even after applying pre-emergent earlier in the season.

That’s because most pre-emergents do not prevent nutsedge.

Instead, nutsedge has to be controlled post-emerge after it has already come up.

A few things to know about it:
• It grows aggressively in warm weather
• It thrives in wet or overwatered areas
• It often grows faster than the turf around it, making it stick out after mowing

One common mistake:
❌ Pulling it by hand

Unfortunately, that usually doesn’t solve the problem because nutsedge spreads through underground tubers (“nutlets”) that remain in the soil.

The key is early identification and using the right post-emergent treatment before it spreads further.

If you’re noticing bright green, fast-growing patches in your lawn, there’s a good chance it could be nutsedge.

The lawns that look the best this summer are being built right now. 💯

Mid-May is one of the most important times of the year for Bermuda and Zoysia lawns.

This is when:
✅ Grass is actively growing
✅ Lawns begin thickening up
✅ Treatments start making a visible difference

But it’s also when:
❌ Weeds spread fast
❌ Thin areas become harder to recover
❌ Small problems turn into bigger ones

The difference between an average lawn and a standout lawn usually comes down to consistency and timing.

If your lawn isn’t where you want it to be yet, now’s the time to get ahead before summer stress fully kicks in.

🌱 What Happens to Fescue Lawns in May

As we move into May, fescue lawns begin to transition.

Fescue thrives in cooler weather, so as temperatures rise:
• Growth starts to slow
• Stress begins to increase
• Thin or weak areas may become more noticeable

This is completely normal.

What matters now is how you manage the transition into summer:

💧 Watering
Aim for consistent, deep watering. Not frequent, shallow watering

✂️ Mowing height
Keep it taller to help shade the soil and reduce stress

⚠️ Avoid heavy stressors
Be cautious with aggressive treatments that can push the lawn too hard

🦠 Watch for disease pressure
As heat and moisture increase, conditions become ideal for fungal issues like brown patch

Preventative fungicide helps protect fescue through summer.
The goal isn’t perfection. It’s survival now and a strong comeback in the fall.

🌸 Hello, May! 🌸

Now it’s about momentum.

Warm-season lawns like Bermuda and Zoysia are no longer just waking up, they’re growing.

This is the month where:
✔ Lawns start filling in
✔ Color becomes more consistent
✔ Growth begins to take off

But here’s the key, what you do now determines how strong that growth becomes.

Consistent treatments, proper watering, and staying ahead of w**ds all play a big role in how your lawn performs heading into summer.

A good May sets up a great June.

We’ve officially started spring aeration this week, and it’s one of the most beneficial services you can do for your lawn this time of year. 🌱 💯

👉 What is aeration?
Aeration removes small cores from the soil to relieve compaction and allow your lawn to breathe.

👉 Why it matters:
• Improves air and water movement into the soil
• Encourages deeper, stronger root growth
• Helps nutrients reach the root zone more effectively
• Supports better overall turf health and density

In our Upstate SC clay soils, compaction is very common and aeration can make a noticeable difference in how your lawn performs.

Timing is key. Aeration is most effective once the lawn is actively growing so it can recover quickly and maximize results.

If you’re looking to improve your lawn’s health this season, aeration is a great place to start.

💭 If you’re unsure whether your lawn would benefit, feel free to reach out, we’re happy to help.😉

📷 Behind the scenes of a healthier lawn…

This is what it looks like when fertilizer is applied the right way.

It’s not just pushing a spreader across the lawn, it’s:
✅ Even, consistent coverage
✅ Paying attention to edges and high-visibility areas
✅ Making sure your lawn gets exactly what it needs

Small details like this make a big difference over time.

That’s how you go from a lawn that’s just “okay”…
to one that’s thick, green, and something you’re proud of.

We take pride in doing it right every visit. 💪💯

Fire Ant Season Is Starting Up 🐜

Seeing small mounds in your lawn? There’s a good chance they’re Red Imported Fire Ants (RIFA).

They can bite, spread quickly, and take over fast if left untreated.

👉 Treat early for best results.

Bait products (like Advion) work well by targeting the colony, not just the mound.

For longer-term control, licensed applicators (like us) can provide treatments that offer up to 12 months of protection.

If you’re seeing activity and not sure what to do, feel free to message us. Happy to help! ☺️
