What is Regenerative Design — and why should you care?

Most people have heard the term “sustainable design.” It usually means building in a way that reduces harm—using less energy, less water, and fewer resources.

That’s a good start… but here’s the problem:

If the land is already damaged, “doing less harm” doesn’t fix it.

That’s why many leaders in architecture and environmental design are shifting toward something better—Regenerative Design.

So what does that actually mean?

Regenerative Design is about creating homes and spaces that don’t just sit on the land—but actually improve it.

Think of it this way: Instead of just lowering your impact, your home can:
• Help restore soil health
• Manage and reuse water naturally
• Work with the climate instead of fighting it
• Create healthier spaces for you and your family

Organizations like the International Living Future Institute and Regenesis Group explain that the goal is no longer just to be “less bad”—but to design buildings that actively give back more than they take.

Here’s a look at one of the residential landscape architecture projects I worked on during my time with a previous firm—an incredible high-end private home in Sedona, Arizona.

This project was a great collaboration between the designer, a talented coworker, and myself, and it pushed me to use every bit of my technical background in both 2D and 3D design.

To kick off the project, I created the preliminary plot plan and rebuilt the home as accurately as possible in AutoCAD using the builder community’s construction documents. From there, I translated the designer’s concept into a detailed CAD plan, working closely with them to revise, refine, and elevate the design until it truly stood out.

Once the 2D design was finalized, I moved into 3D—reconstructing the home in SketchUp using the elevation documents provided. I also developed a close representation of the site’s topography based on the existing conditions. With teamwork, communication, and a strong workflow between AutoCAD and SketchUp, we were able to bring the full vision together and deliver the project on time for both the designer and the client.

Below, I’m sharing a PDF of the CAD design as well as snapshots from the SketchUp model that was used to build out the 3D environment. The final rendering shown was created after my time with the firm, applying everything I learned along the way.
