Our recent PBG post showed what happens when someone tries to piggyback through behind another vehicle. Spoiler: it didn’t work out.

What does ASTM crash-rated actually mean?

When it comes to vehicle security barriers, “crash-rated” isn’t just a marketing term. It refers to performance demonstrated through standardized testing.
ASTM F2656/F2656M is the recognized test method for evaluating vehicle security barriers against defined vehicle impact conditions.

During testing, barriers are subjected to controlled vehicle impacts based on factors such as vehicle type, weight and impact speed. One important measure is how far the vehicle penetrates beyond the barrier after impact.
The result provides security professionals with a standardized way to evaluate barrier performance and select solutions based on the specific vehicle threat and site requirements.

ASTM F2656 is commonly used in applications involving:
