🏗️👷 Meet Pete Cano, our Senior Project Coordinator at Schuff Steel! With 40 years in the industry and 15 years at Schuff, Pete has been a part of nearly a third of our company's history and is exactly the kind of person we are proud to celebrate as we mark our 50th Anniversary. 🎉

Recently promoted to Senior Project Coordinator, Pete works alongside our PMs, detailers, shop, and field teams to keep projects on schedule and problems solved fast. His favorite part? Working directly with the field crews as they erect the building, talking through issues in real time and getting quick answers to keep things moving. 🔧

🏆 Some of his proudest projects: UCSF Benioff Children's Hospital, the Apple Campus Theater, San Jose Earthquakes Soccer Stadium, and UC Davis Hospital. As Pete puts it, "When the last beam is erected, you stand back and say to yourself, 'Wow, WE did that.'"

💡 What keeps him motivated? The people at the Schuff Stockton office. Pete genuinely looks forward to coming to work every day, and that says it all.

🔩 Advice for those just starting out: "This job is very rewarding. You get to watch a building go up from the very first design drawing all the way to the last beam. It's a great feeling."

⛳ Outside of work: Even though he may not get on the course as much as he'd like, Pete loves to golf and uses the driving range as his therapy. He also loves Friday date nights with his wife Linda and is a proud dad of two daughters, one in accounting in San Francisco and one a NICU Nurse in Phoenix. Oh, and we can't forget the last family member, Graice the Shih Tzu Maltese! 🐾

Thank you, Pete, for 15 years of dedication to Schuff Steel. Here's to 50 years of Schuff Steel and many more! 👏

On this Memorial Day, we pause to honor the men and women who gave everything in service to our nation.

We build with strength, but we never forget that true strength is found in those who sacrifice so others may live free. To the fallen and to the families who carry their memory: thank you. Your legacy is the foundation we stand on.

The historic restoration of the iconic Hangar 1 at Moffett Federal Airfield was recently completed, and Schuff Steel is proud to have been part of it. ✈️✨

Schuff Steel fabricated and erected 165 tons of retrofit steel to reinforce the structure while preserving as much of the original historical frame as possible. Working with historic materials and complex geometry, our team had to innovate at every turn, and nearly all structural components ended up requiring field fabrication as a result.

Our scope:
📋 Project Management
⚙️ Steel Detailing
👷 Steel Fabrication
🏗️ Steel Er****on
📐 BIM
🦺 Design-Assist

This project achieved a major safety milestone: over one million safe working hours across all trades with zero lost-time injuries. Schuff Steel’s Union Ironworkers from Locals 377 & 378 completed 100,000+ of those hours, performing complex ironwork at height inside a historic structure without a single lost-time incident. 🔩💪

Congratulations to the entire Schuff Steel team for their contributions to the restoration of this incredible aviation landmark. 🎉👷

Schuff Steel strives to be at the forefront of innovation and collaboration when it comes to steel construction. 🏗️💡⚙️

We are excited to hear of the newly funded research grant by the Charles Pankow Foundation (CPF) for SpeedFrame. This multi-year research initiative will be led by Dr. Soheil Shafaei of Utah State University & supported by Josh Mouras of Magnusson Klemencic Associates.
Funded by the Charles Pankow Foundation, MKA Foundation, and American Institute of Steel Construction, the research will focus on development of a new concrete-filled composite moment frame system intended to improve structural stiffness and lateral performance on structures with large spans and tall story heights where traditional steel MF systems may not be sufficient. Key emphasis will also be finding the most efficient designs for constructability to reduce onsite field labor while leveraging offsite pre-fabrication.

Schuff is honored to be asked to help serve as an Industry Ally to this research effort along with other design and construction leaders from Severud Associates, Degenkolb Engineers, Kruth Engineering, Clark Construction Group, The Herrick Corporation, Berlin Steel, and JF Stearns.

This research project aims to develop “concrete-filled composite moment-resisting frames” (hereafter, referred to as a “SpeedFrame structural system”), which are meant to improve structural stiffness and lateral performance. The SpeedFrame structural system provides higher lateral stiffness ...

Last month we hosted our 22nd Annual Schuff Steel Charity Golf Classic benefiting Desert Voices! ⛳🏌️

Desert Voices Oral Learning Center is an Arizona non-profit organization that’s dedicated to teaching deaf or hard of hearing children the listening and spoken language skills they need to speak with confidence.

Schuff Steel was introduced to Desert Voices back in 2002, when an employee’s daughter enrolled in the organization. After seeing the tremendous impact that Desert Voices had in her life, Schuff got involved.

Over the years, Schuff Steel has helped to raise over $2 million to support and impact the lives of many children, ensuring they won’t have limitations because of hearing loss.

With help from sponsors, golfers, and volunteers we were able to raise a record breaking $420,220 this year! Thank you to everyone that came out to support Desert Voices, and thank you to Desert Voices for helping these children find their voice. 🎉👏

Bridge mode on! 🌉

Last month, Schuff Steel was proud to sponsor student engineers from Utah Valley University (UVU) in the Student Steel Bridge Competition! This competition is part of the American Institute of Steel Construction's University Programs in conjunction with the American Society of Civil Engineers, challenging teams to design and build a bridge spanning approximately 20 feet and capable of carrying 2,500 pounds. 🔧💪

This challenge gave the students the chance to apply what they've learned in the classroom to a real-world engineering challenge. The Schuff-sponsored team took fourth place in regionals, which were held at the University of Utah campus.

Supporting the next generation of engineers is something we're passionate about, and moments like this remind us why. Great job, Wolverines! 🏗️🎉

🏗️👷 Introducing Jeffrey Krieg, AKA "Red Dog," a Maintenance Mechanic at Schuff Steel and a true living legend of the craft! With 45 years at Schuff Steel, Jeffrey embodies everything our 50th Anniversary celebration is about: dedication, craftsmanship, and taking pride in the work.

Jeffrey has done it all at Schuff Steel. Starting as a general laborer, he worked his way through welder, welder/fitter, and team leader before landing in his current role keeping our welding machines and cranes running. There truly is never a dull moment.

🏆 Some of his most memorable projects: Jeffrey's hands have helped build some of Schuff Steel's most iconic structures. The MGM Grand, the Eiffel Tower at Paris Las Vegas, and Chase Field (formerly Bank One Ballpark) to name a few. At Chase Field, his team fabricated massive trusses that to this day remain one of the most impressive feats of steel fabrication he's been a part of. As Jeffrey puts it, 'It's still standing, welded with my own hands.'

💡What keeps him coming back? You can't do what we do at Schuff Steel anywhere else. For Jeffrey, it has always been about the craft and taking real pride in the work, building things that stand the test of time.

🔩 Advice for those just starting out: "Come here, dig in, and actually learn the trade. Take pride in what you're doing. Don't just make it a paycheck."

🪡 Outside of work: When he's not on the shop floor, Jeffrey is working with his hands in a different way, doing upholstery on everything from couches to cars, and spending time camping and fishing. A craftsman through and through! 🎣🏕️

👏Thank you, Jeffrey, for 45 years of dedication, craftsmanship, and pride in the work at Schuff Steel. Here's to 50 years of Schuff Steel and many more! 🎉

In honor of celebrating our 50th anniversary here at Schuff Steel, we will be highlighting some of our historic projects throughout the year.

To kick it off, we are excited to share our very first project, the ASU Sun Devil Stadium Upper Deck Expansion! 🏗️

In 1976, we were awarded the structural steel er****on scope for this addition which increased the capacity by over 12,000 seats. We erected around 500 tons of steel led by our founder, Dave Schuff, alongside Mardian Construction to complete this project in 1977. 🏟️

The impact from their hard work still stands today, celebrated by every Sun Devil and guest that walks into the stadium. At the first game following the expansion, the Sun Devils won 42 – 30!
