Last Tuesday was a wonderful opportunity to learn more about the .nawic and the many ways it supports education and professional development within the construction industry.

We explored the variety of courses offered through NEF and learned the fascinating history behind the Construction Dictionary—a resource that was born out of a need for common construction terminology and is now managed by NEF.

We also learned about the NAWIC awards and the incredible women they were named after, giving us an even greater appreciation for the history and legacy of women in construction.

One especially exciting piece of history was discovering that the Greater Phoenix NAWIC Chapter was a test chapter for Block Kids when the program was first created! It's a great reminder of the role our chapter has played in helping inspire the next generation to explore careers in construction.

A special thank you to Carol Hagen and Linda Austin for sharing your knowledge, stories, and insights with us. And thank you to @ for hosting us and providing such a welcoming space for our chapter!

We're grateful for opportunities like this to learn from our history, celebrate the women who helped pave the way, and continue building the future of our industry. 💙

What an unforgettable week!

Last week's 71st NAWIC Annual Conference was the perfect mix of learning, celebrating, networking, and having WAY too much fun. ❤️

We had some incredible speakers—including Olympic medalist Sarah Wells, Survivor winner Erika Casupanan, and Designing Justice + Designing Spaces Design Director Deanna Van Buren—who left us inspired and thinking differently about leadership, growth, and the impact we can make.

But some of my favorite moments were the ones we got to experience together:

👠 Two of our own members, Tara Orrick and Kennie (Karbiner) Davis, walked in the fashion show!
🏆 Celebrating nationwide awards and the incredible accomplishments of national members
🎉 Welcoming the new NEF and national board and celebrating those who have served before them
📚 Learning more about women's suffrage and the history behind the work we continue today
🤝 Connecting with members and industry friends from across the country
💃 And, of course… absolutely DANCING OUR ASSES OFF at the after party!

Our chapter is walking away with plenty of notes and ideas, but even more gratitude for the people who make this community so special.

We learned. We celebrated. We connected. We showed up. And we had a damn good time doing it. 🥂

Construction Acronyms Everyone Should Know 🏗️

If you've ever stepped onto a jobsite or attended a construction meeting, you've probably heard conversations full of acronyms. Knowing these common terms can help you communicate more confidently across the industry.

Here are a few you'll hear often:
▪️ RFI – Request for Information
▪️RFQ – Request for Qualifications
▪️RFP – Request for Proposal
▪️CO – Change Order
▪️GC – General Contractor
▪️A/E – Architect/Engineer
▪️PPE – Personal Protective Equipment
▪️OSHA – Occupational Safety and Health Administration
▪️BIM – Building Information Modeling
▪️LEED – Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design

Did you know? Our chapter has played a lasting role in construction history.

In 1966, the NAWIC Greater Phoenix Chapter #98 authored and published the Construction Dictionary, a reference created to help standardize construction terminology and improve communication throughout the industry. What began as a local chapter initiative became a valued resource for construction professionals and reflected NAWIC's commitment to education, professionalism, and advancing the industry.

Nearly 60 years later, that same commitment continues. Whether we're learning new technology, mentoring future leaders, or simply sharing industry knowledge, we're proud to carry forward the legacy established by the remarkable women of NAWIC Greater Phoenix Chapter #98.

A big thank you to GCON Inc. for hosting our July Membership Meeting!

We had a great evening learning about the WELL Building Standard and how thoughtful lighting design, daylighting, and automated shading systems can improve occupant health, comfort, and productivity while supporting energy efficiency. We also explored the different WELL certification levels and how WELL and LEED can work together to create healthier, higher-performing buildings.

Thank you to everyone who attended and made it another great evening of education, networking, and connection. We can't wait to see you at our next NAWIC Greater Phoenix event!
