Electric safety around the office

Don't mix water and electricity. Never touch an electric appliance when your hands are wet or while you are standing on a wet floor. Also, do not place any electrical appliances in or near water.
Always disconnect appliances before cleaning or servicing.
Immediately turn off and disconnect any appliance that sparks or stalls. When repairs are needed, seek qualified help.
Don't remove the third prong to insert a three-prong plug into a conventional two-plug outlet. Instead, use an adapter, available at any hardware store.

Cords

Only use certified extension cords listed by a recognized certification organization such as Underwriters Laboratories ("UL listed").
Inspect cords for wear, especially at plugs and connections to make sure they are in good shape.
Do not place cords where someone can trip over or step on them, causing excessive wear.
Pull the plug, not the cord, to disconnect a device.
Avoid twisting, binding or crushing the cord.
Never overload circuits. If possible, do not use extension cords either.
Make sure the switch is off before plugging in a cord. This will help you avoid accidental starts.
