In this hot weather we make the mistake of connecting fans, refrigerators, portable air conditioners, etc…; without knowing that we are overloading the circuits.
This family woke up at 4 in the morning smelling burnt plastic in their bedroom.
Thank God they are okay but something very serious could have happened.
Let's educate ourselves about our electrical system.
1.- A 15 amp breaker or tablet with 14 gauge wire can safely withstand up to 1300 watts.
In the specifications of your appliances it should indicate how many watts it needs to work in optimal conditions.
2.- A 20 amp breaker or tablet with 12 gauge wire can safely withstand up to 1800 watts. Note:- Nowadays there are breakers or tablets that turn off or trip automatically to avoid current overloads, these breakers are known as ARC fault circuit breakers.
And they are required by NEC (National Electrical Code) in all new homes and are recommended for all homes that do not have this system.
