Waterfront Tree Injections in Midcoast Maine 🌊🌳

Treating trees right on the shoreline takes a different approach. Maine law prohibits spraying for Browntail Moth within 50 feet of the high water mark, but trunk injections are allowed because the treatment goes directly into the tree, not into the air or water.

This job was less than 50 feet from the shore. The tree draws the treatment up through its own system and carries it to the leaves where pests feed, with no drift and no runoff into the water.

Fall is a smart time to act. Young Browntail Moth caterpillars are feeding now, before they settle into their winter webs in October. A fall treatment paired with a spring follow-up gives waterfront trees the strongest protection heading into next season.

Our licensed team handles every treatment in line with Maine regulations, so you can protect your trees and the water they overlook.

WINTER MOTH WORKSHOP

Late October is a great time to learn about winter moths and prepare for their arrival. Adult winter moths typically become active in late November and can remain active through January whenever temperatures are above freezing.

Winter moth larvae feed on many of Maine’s deciduous trees and shrubs, including oak, maple, apple, elm, ash, crabapple, cherry, and blueberry. Repeated heavy infestations can lead to branch dieback and even tree mortality.

Join the City of Bath and the Bath Community Forestry Committee for a free community workshop to learn how to identify signs of winter moth infestation and help protect Bath’s trees and shrubs.

Wednesday, October 21
9:00 AM
BCFC Nursery at Oak Grove Cemetery
Enter from Old Brunswick Road at the Oak Grove Cemetery entrance, just past the middle school when leaving town.

During this hands-on workshop, participants will learn about:

• Signs of winter moth infestation
• Risks to trees in our community
• Integrated pest management strategies
• Using sticky trap barriers to help manage adult winter moths

The workshop is free and open to the public, and no registration is required. It will run for up to two hours.

Parking is available at the nursery and along the cemetery access road. Handouts will be available to take home, along with additional resources from the Maine Forest Service.

Questions? Contact the Bath Public Works Department at (207) 443-8357.

Crane-Assisted Tree Removal in Midcoast Maine 🌲🏗️

Some trees can’t come down the traditional way, and that’s where a crane changes everything. When a tree is oversized, leaning toward a structure, or tucked into a tight spot near power lines, Hawkes Tree Service brings in crane support to lift and lower sections with total control. It keeps the job safer for the crew, protects your lawn and driveway from heavy equipment traffic, and gets even the trickiest removals done cleanly.

Our certified arborists handle every cut, and the crane operator manages the lift, working together every step of the way. Whether it’s storm damage, a hazardous lean, or a tree that’s simply too big for standard methods, we’ve got the equipment and expertise to take it down right.

Waterfront View Enhancement in Midcoast Maine

Dreaming of a clearer water view? Our trained crew enhances waterfront views the right way, following Maine shoreland zoning laws every step of the way. Using a points system, we calculate exactly how much tree removal is permissible within 75 feet of the water, so your project stays fully compliant. Our track chipper gets equipment down to the shore easily, keeping cleanup efficient and your property protected. We’ll work with you to build a plan that cleans, thins, and enhances your shoreland trees while keeping you on the right side of the regulations.

Late August doesn’t mean you’ve missed your window. Browntail Moth caterpillars are still feeding right now, and a properly timed soil injection can knock back next year’s population before they settle into winter webs.

This isn’t a job for guesswork. Licensed, experienced arborists know how to time the injection, read the tree’s health, and apply the product safely near wells, wetlands, and the coastline that makes Midcoast Maine what it is.

Case in point: one of our recent jobs had our crew working with a water view the whole time, saving a stand of beautiful trees right along the shoreline. Not a bad place to spend the day. 🌊🌳

Don’t wait until spring to wish you’d called sooner.
