When we first showed up to this beast, there was a 2” crack between the stems on my left and right. The canopy was 115’ across with both 3-phase lines and a service drop below. Oh and four houses!

We were hoping to simply fell this one, but the wind kept changing directions, so Jacob got to climb. He had it aimed further up the hill, and the wind still brought back this way… We made the right call not to fell this one!

This Red Alder was on the edge of a cut bank above a brand new shop (cutter’s left) and a 500 gallon propane tank (cutter’s right). A traditional Humboldt or Conventional cut would have broken off the hinge too soon and pushed the log forward. An open face takes longer to close, and the hinge is able to hold longer, keeping control of the log. Since the I wanted control on the log until it was nearly all the way down, I opened up the face to approximately 110 degrees, to accommodate for the cut bank slope.
