One of the most important parts of servicing a heat pump is verifying the refrigerant charge correctly—not guessing.

In this video, I’m explaining the basics of using superheat and subcooling measurements to determine whether a system has the proper refrigerant charge. These two measurements work together to give us a much clearer picture of what’s happening inside the system.

As a general guideline, you’ll often see:
• Superheat: 8–12°F
• Subcooling: 10–15°F

Depending on the equipment and manufacturer specifications, those target ranges can vary, but this is a solid foundation for understanding the process.

Typically:
✅ High superheat + low subcooling = system is likely low on refrigerant.
✅ Low superheat + high subcooling = system is likely overcharged.

Of course, there are other factors that can affect these readings, and no diagnosis should ever be based on just one measurement. Airflow, indoor and outdoor conditions, metering devices, and manufacturer specifications all play a role. But understanding the relationship between superheat and subcooling is one of the fundamentals every HVAC technician should master.

Just remembered that I love my life .
Life can get so overwhelming sometimes and we can tunnel vision into whatever it is we’re doing and forget to take a step back enjoy the show.

It is so darn fun to run my own business. An electrical/HVAC bizz … ya know, I can work 12 hours a day for a man, and be miserable… but do 14 hours for myself and still feel not only tireless , but enthused at the end of the day.

Lookin down at this table, studying a set of blueprints, making a plan for how I’m gonna execute the work, I just feel blessed, and grateful . How remarkable it is to observe how far you’ve come and to remember all the pain and tears that got you there .

Thank you god . Finally learning to be proud of me again.

Repair a large refrigerant leak on the evaporator coil in a walk - in cooler with the brazing method . Most people don’t do these repairs anymore they just quote new systems . Saving customers money with skill, tenacity and perseverance 😊
