Some of the last craftsmen still building for the next generation might be small business contractors.

It’s something I was talking about with another contractor today.

Think about it…

When I remodel a bathroom, I’m not building it to make it to the end of a warranty. I’m building it so that, long after I’m gone, someone tears it out because they want something different—not because it failed.

That’s become rare.

A lot of products today are designed with replacement in mind. Renovations are expected. Lifespans are calculated. “Good enough” has become the standard.

But most small contractors don’t think that way.

We overbuild.
We reinforce things no one will ever see.
We spend extra time making sure corners are square, floors are level, and waterproofing is done right—even though the homeowner may never know the difference.

Not because it makes us more money.

Because our name is attached to it.

If someone opens up one of my bathrooms 40 years from now, I hope the conversation isn’t, “Who did this?”

I hope it’s…

“Whoever built this knew exactly what they were doing.”

Paint-and-primer is not a substitute for real primer. Stop believing the label.

Paint companies love marketing “paint & primer in one,” but here’s the reality:

If you’re painting over fresh drywall, new joint compound, patched walls, stains, or a surface with different porosity, you still need an actual primer.

Primer is designed to:
✔️ Seal porous surfaces.
✔️ Create an even substrate.
✔️ Improve adhesion.
✔️ Reduce flashing and uneven sheen.
✔️ Help your finish coat actually look like a finish coat.

Paint—even if the can says “paint & primer”—is still just paint. It wasn’t designed to replace a dedicated primer when the surface calls for one.

Skipping primer might save you 30 minutes today…
It’ll cost you hours fixing it later.

Do it once. Do it right.

Think you’ve seen everything in old houses? Think again. 🪒

If you’ve ever opened up a bathroom wall in a home built before the 1970s, you’ve probably found a pile of old razor blades.

That’s because medicine cabinets used to have a hidden razor disposal slot. Instead of throwing used blades in the trash, people would simply drop them into the wall cavity.

Fast forward 50+ years, and we’re the ones cleaning up thousands of them during renovations. 😅

If your corners aren’t dead square, don’t even think about setting tile.

Cannot rely on thinset to hide bad framing. Every wall is checked for plumb. Every corner is checked for square. Every detail is dialed in before waterproofing ever begins.

The finished shower only looks as good as what’s underneath it.

The craftsmanship starts long before the first tile is installed.

Think this is overkill? Ask any great tile setter. 👇
