It’s World Water Week 💧

Thoughtful landscape architecture is about designing spaces that work with nature, conserve water + build resilience for the future.

From native plantings and rain gardens to efficient irrigation and healthy soils, every design decision can help protect one of our most valuable resources.

Beautiful landscapes and responsible water stewardship go hand in hand ✨

August is Pedestrian Safety Month. In our industry, it’s a reminder that safer streets begin with thoughtful design.

Landscape architecture plays a vital role in creating streets that prioritize people. By integrating green infrastructure like street trees and pedestrian-focused design, we can build healthier, more connected communities where walking and transit are safe, comfortable, and accessible.

Landscape architecture helps create streets that put people first.

☀️We continue our summer series highlighting places our team has travelled in an effort to explore how designers utilize adventure as a means for inspiration and a reset to their creative thinking.

Tauren traveled to Austin, Texas in 2022 to visit a friend who recently moved there. After graduating during COVID, Tauren felt excited to finally pack his bags and explore! Texas hadn’t been a strong destination for him, so going blind was part of the fun!

From kayaking on Lady Bird Lake to watch the bats take flight, exploring Austin’s food scene, and seeing Paramore and Kacey Musgraves at Austin City Limits, the trip was full of incredible moments.

Tauren says what made the trip so memorable was the reminder of how much fun life can be!

Summer is one of the most popular times for travel! Designers can take inspiration from every corner of the world while searching for renewed creative energy. Throughout August, we’ll highlight the team’s travels! ☀️✈️

First up, Landscape Designer, Eric! He and his wife travelled to Vietnam this year for their Honeymoon. Eric said Vietnam had everything they were looking for: amazing food, rich history, vibrant culture, and incredible scenery.

They packed as much as they could into their trip and still felt as though there was so much left to explore!

Eric said, “The food and coffee never got old, and everywhere we went there was another story waiting to be discovered. Trip of a lifetime.” ☕️✨

August has us in the thick of the year’s HEAT, so let’s talk...Heat Maps!

Heat maps turn data into design decisions. By visualizing patterns like sun exposure, temperature, and site activity, landscape architects can create spaces that are more functional, comfortable, and responsive to the people who use them.

Better data leads to better landscapes, prioritizing these early steps can allow a space to thrive.

Public spaces should deliver public benefits ✨

As the dog days of summer continue, water features can play a role in creating places that support both human and environmental health 💧

Thoughtful design isn’t just an amenity; it’s essential. Interactive fountains, misting elements, splash areas, and other water features provide opportunities for cooling, rest, play, and connection, encouraging people to spend more time outdoors despite the heat.

When intentionally integrated with planting, shade, and sustainable water management, these features can contribute to healthier, more comfortable and resilient public spaces. 🌿

💧Smart irrigation starts with smart plant choices.

Heat and drought-tolerant native plants thrive with less water, making them the perfect match for efficient irrigation systems. Together, they create landscapes that are beautiful, resilient, and built to withstand changing conditions.

🌿Design landscapes that work with nature, not against it.

Planting is all about balance ✨

While new landscapes can deliver immediate cooling + ecological benefits, they also need extra care to survive the heat.

The key is matching the planting strategy + the establishment regime to what a client can realistically maintain. Sometimes that’s hand watering, sometimes temporary irrigation, and sometimes it’s waiting for a better season.

Resilient landscapes start with realistic expectations 🌱

NEW on the Blog: Why We Changed Our Minds on Irrigation 💦

For a long time, we were pretty staunchly against irrigation. BUT…

As we’ve grown older and wiser and as we’ve watched the world spiral toward environmental cataclysm, our thinking has evolved.

Historic character doesn’t have to come at the expense of resilience.

The utilization of plant schedules is critical to our work as landscape architects when dealing with historic landscapes. They’re a record of design intent and create the opportunity to shape the performance of a landscape. 🌸🌱🌼

Many plants associated with traditional gardens are drought tolerant. Revisiting plant schedules through the lens of climate adaptation opens opportunities to preserve the spirit of historic landscapes while designing for today’s environmental realities.

Thoughtful plant schedules can balance heritage, performance, and long-term stewardship. Timeless landscapes can also be water-wise. ✨💧
