🌿 CELTIC HERITAGE PLANT OF THE MONTH — AUGUST 🌿

HAZEL — The Tree of Wisdom & Inspiration

Each month, Celtic Gardens of East Tennessee is highlighting a plant with roots in Celtic history, folklore, and the landscapes of Ireland, Scotland, Wales, and the wider Celtic world.

For August, we’re celebrating the Hazel Tree (Corylus avellana). 🌳

Hazel held a special place in Irish and Celtic tradition. It became closely associated with wisdom, knowledge, poetic inspiration, protection, and abundance.

One of the best-known stories comes from Irish mythology and the Salmon of Knowledge. According to the tale, hazelnuts from sacred hazel trees fell into a mystical pool, where they were eaten by a salmon that gained the world’s wisdom. The story eventually became connected with the legendary Irish hero Fionn mac Cumhaill.

✨ WHY HAZEL WAS SO VALUED

Hazel wasn’t only important in folklore. It was an incredibly useful plant.

🌿 Flexible branches could be woven into hurdles, fencing and baskets
🌿 Hazel wood was useful for handles, rods and everyday implements
🌿 Hazelnuts provided a valuable source of food
🌿 Coppiced hazel could continually produce new usable stems
🌿 The plant provided habitat and food for wildlife
🌿 Its ability to regenerate helped make it a fitting symbol of resilience and renewal

There is something beautiful about planting something today that connects a modern garden with traditions stretching back generations.
