As we approach October it's as warm and dry as ever. Current heat reminds us that fire season is far from over.

In recent years we've done a lot of fuel reduction work across Northern California. Thinning trees, clearing brush, getting dead material out of the woods, and preparing areas for controlled burns. Much of this work was done by hand in deep, remote areas.

This work has a direct and lasting impact. Thinned forests give the trees that are left more room to grow. When there's less brush and dead vegetation on the ground, a fire has less fuel to burn, which slows the spread and gives fire crews a better chance to gain control.

A lot of investment and effort has gone into fuel reduction and forest management around Northern California. We're proud to be a part of it, and we're hopeful it pays off.

Looking back at our project at Sonoma Creek.

Working with the National Audubon Society and the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, we helped bring tidal flow back to a marsh on the San Pablo Bay National Wildlife Refuge that had been cut off for the better part of a century.

We navigated very sensitive conditions using our amphibious excavator to traverse the challenging marsh land. New channels were created to give tidal flow a path in and out. Everything we excavated was turned into marsh mounds on site providing high ground for native critters.

With sea levels rising and what looks to be a big winter ahead, these are the types of projects that give nature the resilience to meet an unpredictable future.

Much of our restoration work is to simply emulate nature. Erosion and man-made influence can diminish waterways beyond nature's ability to repair them. They become more prone to flooding, drought, and habitat loss. Renaturalizing these systems often requires large projects to slow the flow and add complexity.

There are many methods and each project is unique. When a system needs heavier intervention, engineered log jams are one approach, where we tie and reinforce logs and root wads together to form natural structures within the channel, slowing and spreading the flow. Pools form, allowing fish and wildlife to rest and feed, sediment drops out and rebuilds the streambed, and the flow starts to vary the way it would in a healthy river. Given room to slow down, the channel reconnects to its floodplain and the whole system recovers over time.

We recently kicked off work on the Pickel Meadow Restoration Project.

Pickel Meadow is a 450-acre mountain meadow on the West Walker River high in California's eastern Sierra Nevada. Nearly two centuries of land use disconnected the river from its floodplain, cut the channel deeper, and dropped the water table across the meadow.

This project is working to reverse that. The project reconnects the river to its floodplain, improving 250 acres of meadow habitat and 3 miles of river. That work includes removing roughly 40,000 cubic yards of artificial fill, regrading historic alluvial fan channels, installing instream habitat features, upgrading water diversions, and replanting the site with native vegetation. Public access gets upgraded too, with trail work and an accessible parking area.

For this project we are working in partnership with , , the .s.forestservice , and Waterways Consulting, with funding from the California Wildlife Conservation Board.

We're hiring! Hanford is looking for Crew Members in the Sonoma North Bay region. This is hands-on ecological construction. Native plant installation, irrigation, soil and seed work, erosion control, bioengineering, and infrastructure development. It's physical, it's outdoors, and it happens in some of the most beautiful places in California.

It’s not always wetlands and ecological restoration. We recently completed the full revitalization of the South Davis Neighborhood Park for the City of Santa Rosa. The scope covered new playground equipment for ages 2 to 5 and 5 to 12, accessible poured-in-place pathways, fencing, lighting, site furnishings, and new monument and park signage, along with the landscape and civil improvements throughout. Hard to believe it's almost been three years since we wrapped construction on the Bull Creek Hamilton Reach restoration deep in Humboldt Redwoods State Park.
The project reshaped the Hamilton floodplain, built four large wood in-stream structures, restored side channels and off-channel ponds, got over 18,000 native plants in the ground, and provided critical habitat for coho salmon, Chinook salmon, steelhead, and Pacific lamprey.

A mitigation site isn't done once the plants go in the ground. We're a few years into a
multi-year commitment on the Arroyo de la Laguna in Pleasanton, working with Sequoia Ecological Consulting, Inc. to get this habitat established for the long haul.

We're proud to share that the Twin Pines
Belmont Creek Restoration was named Project of the
Year by the APWA Silicon Valley chapter — and
Hanford received Contractor of the Year honors
alongside it.

The project involved restoring roughly 600 linear feet of
Belmont Creek within Twin Pines Park: removing
invasive vegetation, stabilizing eroding banks with
large woody debris structures, installing engineered
riffles to reduce future channel erosion, and planting
natives throughout. The goal was to reduce
downstream flooding risk, improve water quality, and
bring back functional aquatic and terrestrial habitat.

Grateful to the City of Belmont for trusting us with this
one, and to everyone on the crew who put in the work.

One of our current projects is along the Bolinas Wye, the junction at the north end of Bolinas Lagoon. We're working alongside and the conservancy on the vegetation side of the Wye Wetlands Resiliency Project.

The overall project reconnected Lewis Gulch Creek to its original path to Bolinas Lagoon, and includes planting over 10,000 native trees and plants. Our crews are helping those plantings take hold by clearing out invasive species such as Cape ivy, Himalayan blackberry, and periwinkle. This work takes a combination of machine work, targeted chemical treatment, hand labor, and routine visits to ensure the entire system transitions back to natural function.

Bolinas Lagoon is a designated Ramsar site, recognized as a wetland of international importance for the rare habitat and biodiversity it supports. As such, it’s a pretty special place to work.
