To everyone who called us for help this summer, I hope you appreciate how good you had it. 😁

These two good-looking boys are back in high school for the next several months, so if your drains plug up, you’re gonna be stuck with my ugly mug again. 😂

All kidding aside, I’d like to think working with me this summer added a little value to my sons. They definitely didn’t have easy jobs, but they worked hard, learned a lot, and helped a whole bunch of good people along the way. I’m pretty proud of both of them.

It’s been a little quiet on our page lately.

Fortunately, it hasn’t been quiet in the sewer truck. 😂

The last few weeks have taken us just about everywhere — plugged sewer mains, roots, repairs, septic issues, camera inspections, hydro jetting and plenty of problems that didn’t look anything like what the homeowner originally thought they were dealing with.

And that last part is important.

When you call Straight Flush, our first job isn’t to sell you a machine, a service or an expensive repair.

Our first job is to figure out what’s actually wrong.

Sometimes that means bringing out the big equipment. Sometimes a camera helps us find the answer. Sometimes it’s a relatively simple fix.

Either way, when we’re finished, our goal is for you to understand what happened, what we did about it, and what you need to know going forward.

Is the sewer gas smell in your house actually sewer gas, or could it be a water heater issue?

Believe it or not, not every “sewer gas” call we get is actually a sewer problem.

If you notice a rotten-egg or sewer-like smell especially when running hot water, one possible culprit is the anode rod inside your water heater. As the rod deteriorates and reacts with certain water conditions, it can contribute to that nasty sulfur-type odor that people often mistake for sewer gas.

In this video, Jackson is removing the anode rod from our water heater so you can see exactly what we’re talking about.

Before assuming you have a sewer problem, pay attention to when the smell happens. Sometimes that little clue can point you in a completely different direction.

Parents are always asking if I can find their kid a summer job.

I just can’t promise it’ll smell like fresh-cut grass.

Today’s assignment for my son Jackson was digging up an old sewer line and installing a new septic riser. Somewhere between the roots, broken pipe, sweat, and sand, I looked over and said,

“Son
 this is where dreams are made.”

He wasn’t buying it. 😂

Truth is, there aren’t many glamorous days in this business.

But there are a whole lot of honest ones.

He’s learning that people don’t call us because they’re having their best day. They call because they need someone they can trust to show up, solve the problem, and treat them right.

That’s a lesson worth learning.

Sure, his buddies might spend the summer making lattes or folding T-shirts. Jackson gets to spend his days excavating ancient sewer lines and discovering artifacts that even archaeologists would pass on. đŸ€Ł

One day he’ll laugh about it
 probably right after he gets the smell out of his boots.

I’m proud of this young man. He shows up, works hard, asks questions, and isn’t afraid to get dirty. Character isn’t built when the job is easy. It’s built when you keep working even when it’s hot, sweaty, and definitely not glamorous.

 every dad should be able to tell people,

Today I met Ollie.

He enjoys long walks through the pasture, sampling every shrub in sight, and posing for selfies with sewer cleaners.

Naturally, I asked if he’d be interested in helping me clean a sewer.

He politely declined.

Apparently, he’s tried sewer roots before


He said they taste kind of crappy. đŸ’©đŸ˜‚

Sometimes the best part of this job isn’t the sewer
 it’s the people.

This project should’ve been finished back in April, but life had other plans. Today we finally wrapped it up, and before I left, Donna and Jackie came outside to say goodbye—and, of course, to make sure I had one more dad joke before I hit the road.

Over the course of this job, I think I emptied about half my dad joke collection on them. At one point I had the plumber on speakerphone explaining what needed to be done, and I told him, “You might want to carry a gun when you go to this house.” Without missing a beat he asked, “Any face tattoos? I need to know if she’s Bloods or Crips.” Donna just laughed and said, “There’s only three eye drops
 it wasn’t my fault!” We all got a good laugh out of it.

We all go through seasons where life feels a little heavier than usual. Then you run into people like Donna and Jackie.

Their kindness, patience, and sense of humor reminded me why I still love doing what I do after all these years. Sure, I clean sewers for a living, but every once in a while I get paid to spend time with genuinely good people, share a few laughs, and leave with new friends.

Thank you, Donna and Jackie, for being two of the nicest customers I’ve ever had the privilege of working for. People like you make this old sewer guy remember why he loves his job.
