Looking For a Small Tree? Try Halesia carolina, or Silverbell. This small deciduous tree or large shrub is native to floodplains, stream banks, wet woods, and swampy areas. The branches are covered with clusters of bell-shaped white flowers in spring. Blooms even in heavy shade. Prefers fertile, moist, slightly acidic soil. Hummingbirds may visit the flowers. The next few posts will highlight small trees that pack a big eco-system punch! How about Sweetbay Magnolia? (Magnolia virginiana) This lovely small to medium sized tree (or large shrub) is adaptable to various conditions including full sun to partial shade, and average to moist soils that do not have to be particularly fertile. It’s also quite happy in soils that are consistently wet and boggy, including those of heavy clay with poor drainage, unlike most magnolia species. It does prefer somewhat acidic soils but will grow in neutral soil as well. Its foliage is semi-evergreen and its flowers (blooms sporadically late spring thru late summer) are extraordinarily fragrant, similar to gardenia blossoms! Its flowers are utilized by various pollinators, its foliage serves as a larval host for a few different butterflies and moths, and its fruits are readily consumed by native songbirds! Getting lunaria going in landscape can be hard it is a biannual and spreads once it gets going . Often it gets pull out as landscapers think it’s a w**d . I like the way it has co-mingled in the juniper , obviously it can handle acid soil and shade
