What kind of lighting do I need for a kitchen remodel?

If you’re currently planning your kitchen, it’s tempting to start by browsing for that perfect statement pendant light. But here is the secret to a kitchen that truly works: Don’t start with the fixture. Start with the plan.

A beautiful light fixture can’t fix a poor lighting plan. To get the kitchen you’ll love living in, we recommend thinking in three layers:

Task Lighting: The light you need for the work you’re actually doing prep, cooking, and cleanup. This is about function and safety.

Ambient Lighting: The general light that fills the room and ensures the space feels welcoming, not just bright.

Accent/Decorative Lighting: The light that adds depth, highlights your design choices, and gives the room personality.

Recessed lighting is a common starting point, but it shouldn't be your entire plan. When you define how you use your kitchen first, it becomes much clearer where recessed lights, under-cabinet lighting, and decorative pendants should actually go.

That is why lighting should be part of your design plan before the remodeling work begins. It prevents the frustration of trying to force lighting to work after your layout is already set in stone.
