When planning a patio, think about shade before you finalize the layout. West-facing patios get hammered by afternoon sun in Arizona, making them uncomfortable most of the year.
Position your seating area on the north or east side, or plan for a pergola or ramada from the start. It's easier to build shade into the design than to add it later, and it'll make your patio usable year-round instead of just a few months.
