Perin grew up on Australia’s Gold Coast, so he’s a bit far from being a Pensacola local per se, but the parallels between the place he began and the place he ended up are pretty similar. Sun, surf, and a relaxed lifestyle by the water.

Water’s always been part of Perin’s DNA—not pools specifically, but the ocean. Not just the Gold Coast’s affinity for the beach life, but he also spent his summers diving off the coast of Papua New Guinea and in the Philippines with his mother, and even found himself building boats here in the panhandle.

But this love story begins in Brisbane, where Perin met Lindsey (our Pensacola-native) while they were both working at the Marriott. He, a very tall drink of water, and she, a very determined woman who likes her water tall. When Lindsey had to move back to the States to be near family, Perin knew he was bound for new beaches. They worked hard to get him here and were married in 2016, eventually relocating to Pensacola and starting a family.

Last week we got our first named storm. Tropical Storm Arthur got downgraded faster than Henry Cavill from my Hall Pass list after seeing Belmont Cameli in Off Campus, BUT it's a good reminder that hurricane season's officially here.

I’ll never forget the day reached into a skimmer basket and hand-palmed a spider the size of a half dollar. Seeing my horrified expression, he just said, “Ah he’s just a lil’ fella” before gently placing him in the brush.

Real talk. Summer storms and scorching Florida temps mean you can't rely entirely on once a week pool service to keep you out of the green.

Here's a few tips on what to do in-between your pool service visits to fight the good fight against our greatest foe: the dreaded algae bloom.

TL;DR:
1. Run your pump at least 12 hours a day (preferably during the hottest times of the day). If things start looking sketchy, run it even longer. This is your best defense.
2. Give the walls a brush mid-week.
3. Skim when it needs it.
4. After a big storm --> skim the surface, test your levels, and shock it. Don't wait. Storms dilute your water chemistry and spikes phosphate levels, which is basically algae fertilizer.
