Maybe the old houses were onto something.

There’s something special about a home that invites you to slow down, sit for a while and actually be part of the neighborhood around you.

That’s what I love about preservation. We’re not trying to make these houses new again. We’re trying to hold onto what made them so good in the first place and make sure there’s still room for life to happen there.

So yes, we will always make room for the porch. 🤍

The things you find behind the walls of an old house. 👀

Before drywall, there was wood lath and plaster. Thin strips of wood created the framework, then layers of plaster were applied over them.

And mixed right into that plaster? Horsehair.

The hair acted as reinforcement, helping strengthen the plaster and reduce cracking. A building technique that has literally held up for generations.

One of our favorite parts of working with historic homes is uncovering how they were built in the first place. Preservation isn’t just about keeping what’s beautiful, it’s also about understanding the craftsmanship behind it.

Monday Preservation Guild update. 🛠️

Exterior paint is nearly complete at Cervantes, cabinets are going in at the Bride’s Cottage, pool cabana windows are arriving at 6th & Jackson, and Blount Street just checked another big item off the list.

We’re also still looking for skilled subcontractors, especially a framer with experience renovating old homes. If that’s you or someone you know, send us a message!

Of course we had to go see (and try) it for ourselves. ☕️

Our Chandler & Co. team stopped by the newly opened Foxtail Coffee, and when you work in construction and historic preservation, you can’t help but appreciate the details.

A big shoutout to ParsCo Construction for the beautiful work bringing this historic Pensacola building back to life and Pensacola Architecture Firm for their expert architecture. It’s always exciting to see an old space given a new purpose while keeping the character that made it worth saving in the first place.

And always good running into our friend Sam Young with Habitat for Humanity!

Congratulations again to everyone who had a hand in this one. Pensacola preservation looks good on you. 🤍
