Pumpkins for Thanksgiving (and maybe Halloween)!
There is enough time to grow some varieties of pumpkins and winter squash in time for Thanksgiving and possibly even Halloween. This weekend we have 3 varieties of pumpkin-shaped squashes. They were all chosen for their resistance to Squash Vine Borers and their shorter time to mature.

In addition, we have two other Solid-Stemmed Squashes that are shaped different from pumpkins. These can be grown to a mature orange color, but are typically eaten at an immature green color as a substitute for zucchini and yellow squash. In fact, all pumpkins and winter squashes can be eaten this same way.

Here is Renée on our very first day at the Palafox Market in Downtown Pensacola . We had just a smattering of really cool plants to start with. We had not yet thought of having photos marking each type of plant for people to read on their own. I talked all day long answering questions and all that talking was exhausting. I finally learned to do vocal warm-up exercises before the market - that's how much I talked!

But I absolutely loved it! I really like talking about plants and helping other people be better gardeners. I feel very lucky to be able to earn a living this way.

Melokhiya is an ancient leafy green grown all over the tropics. With good reason as it does extremely well in those conditions being able to tolerate high heat plus too much rain or too little. That is pretty close to the weather we typically get for the next few months as we enter Late Gulf Coast Summer which is generally dry & hot with maybe a tropical storm.

Melokhiya has been used for eons and has traveled far and wide. It thus goes by many names. It is beloved by Nigerians who call it Ewedu, Filipinos who call it Saluyot, English speakers call it Jute, and in Egypt it is called Melokhiya (which, for real, has at least 10 different spellings).

Melokhiya is related to Roselle, Cranberry Hibiscus, Mallow, and Okra. Being related to all these means it's leaves have a bit of a mucilaginous feel, particularly when cooked with water. I don't have proof, but I suspect that this quality is what gives the plant its ability to withstand drought and high heat. When I lived in the equatorial Central African Republic vegetables like Okra and Melokhiya were much loved making me wonder if they don't pass on the ability to better tolerate heat to the person eating them.

The leaves can be eaten raw, but are usually cooked into a thick "sauce" and eaten with rice or other starch or it is made into a stew. The immature seed pods are also edible when they are still tender.

This weekend we'll have lots of fascinating plants such as Katuray which is pictured here. Katuray (aka Agati) is a striking Southeast Asian plant that looks like something from a Dr. Seuss book. Katuray produces gorgeous edible flowers which are used as a vegetable in many recipes such as Ensaladang Katuray. We have plants with pinkish flowers.

This a very tropical plant and must be protected below 40F. We once planted one in the ground in the spring after keeping it indoors all winter as a houseplant. Although it did die the following winter, it first grew a 10' tall tree loaded with gorgeous flowers! It was quite impressive! Katuray may also be grown in a container where it can last for years if protected from the cold.

Colorful Okra
No, it is not too late to plant okra! Okra is a fast growing vegetable and with our plants you'll be harvesting your own okra pods in about a month. The leaves of okra are also edible and are commonly used as a cooked green throughout Africa. During the Civil War some even roasted the seeds and used them as a coffee substitute!

Okra is related to Hibiscuses like Roselle and Cranberry Hibiscus as well as the ornamental Hibiscuses (and cotton, too!). It is a gorgeous plant and can handle everything our summers throw at it whether that's intense heat and/or excessive rain. And once established it can even handle very little rain!

We'll have several varieties of Okra plants and much more this weekend:

Ice-Cold Home-Grown Roselle Tea!
(aka Hibiscus)
You, too, could be quenching your thirst with Roselle you grew in your own garden. How cool would it be to share it with your friends and family on a day like today! Roselle is amazingly easy to grow. Being a tropical plant Roselle loves the heat and humidity of our summers.

Roselle tea is made from the calyx of a specific species of hibiscus, Hibiscus sabdariffa. Often mistaken for a flower the calyx is a separate part and is the star-shaped thing between the stem and the flower. In most plants it is green and leathery. Roselle is unique in that its calyx is cranberry-colored and fleshy. It's also fruity-tasting and delicious!

With a handful of plants you could grow gallons of the calices (plural of calyx). Best of all, they have many other uses besides tea: jams, pies, fruit salads, cordials, faux cranberry sauce, and more.
